What was the reason? An attempt to rule out white kids and black kids ever attending the same school?

It is a myth that poor inner city schools are underfunded. In fact they usually get more per student than comparitive towns that are not poor.

If spending money on education was the answer, we'd be the smartest country in the world by a country mile.

It's not. It's about parenting and demanding more from students.

And notice, other countries don't have teachers unions like we do either.

How and when did I ever discredit the military? People who have come from poor backgrounds serve in the military. Our military is American and poor people do exist in America and actually, many people use the military's education benefits to pay for education that would be more difficult to afford. Would it make you feel better if I said that the military has people of all backgrounds, rich, poor, black, white, etc. What is your problem?

So then what was the point of bringing it up? I am a little confused, it would be like saying some poor people go to starbucks.... If you had no point, then why say it. I'll tell you why, you were infering that the poor are steered into the military, if you weren't then what was the purpose.

The Good Reverend's problem? Easy, his awesomeness...

I wouldn't say 'steered'. I would say, however, that family friends who have taught in low-income high schools and other friends who have gone to low-income high schools have told me and others that they pushed military very hard as an option for people at their schools. This is a fact given in response to a question about whether the idea of a vocational career was presented to students. I responded by saying that I had only heard that military careers were presented strongly. And it appears that I'm right.

Many of today's recruits are financially strapped, with nearly half coming from lower-middle-class to poor households, according to new Pentagon data based on Zip codes and census estimates of mean household income. Nearly two-thirds of Army recruits in 2004 came from counties in which median household income is below the U.S. median.
All of the Army's top 20 counties for recruiting had lower-than-national median incomes, 12 had higher poverty rates, and 16 were non-metropolitan, according to the National Priorities Project, a nonpartisan research group that analyzed 2004 recruiting data by Zip code.

    Talk about "cherry picking" data......

But it is not exactly representative of America. There are proportionately more Blacks and Latinos in the military than in the society as a whole. The wealthy and the very poor are under-represented in the military. And on average, those in the enlisted ranks are better educated than their civilian counterparts and have higher reading scores.
    Teachable Moment -

Read, the very poor, the ones we are talking about are under-represented, and those that do serve tend to score higher in reading tests. What does this tell us?

    Wait, but there is more:

"Members of the all-volunteer military are significantly more likely to come from high-income neighborhoods than from low-income neighborhoods. Only 11 percent of enlisted recruits in 2007 came from the poorest one-fifth (quintile) of neighborhoods, while 25 percent came from the wealthiest quintile. These trends are even more pronounced in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program, in which 40 percent of enrollees come from the wealthiest neighborhoods-a number that has increased substantially over the past four years."

In effect the middle class produces soldiers are a rate that is equalivalent to ther representation in our population, the poor are under-represented, and the wealthy serve at a rate greater than their representation.
