Anyone know how old this japanese reactor was?
Your answer sounds good, except for the fact lab experiments and even modeling and simulation don't account for everything. And my answer wasn't in that context anyway, but in response to someone's statements. A nuclear engineer friend of mine said he thought they were relatively old.

Does anyone even know how to design for an 8.9 quake??? The entire island of Honshu moved 2.4 meters for goodness stake. I know Taipei 101 was built for a 7.0 jolt... I would hate to see what would happen were Taipei hit by an 8.9 quake...

You said he was on CNN, so why the cheap shot at foxnews advertisers? I fail to see the connection.

Or, perhaps he is analyzing the difficulty Japan will have in paying for the cleanup... don't know as I haven't seen it (yet)...

    They are both exactly alike.

Ar Fox they analyzed the possible business profits of bombing Iran, years ago.

I found the shock wave in many of the videos that are on TV, CNN, and the internet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjx-JlwYtyE
There seemed to be only one actual video source, so find one that has good resolution. Look closely right at the beginning of the explosion, the first 50 msec or so. It suddenly appears above the very beginning of the explosion and travels upward for less than a tenth of a second. Note that a pressure wave travels at the speed of sound. What it is water vapor that instantly condenses from the air due to pressure, then evaporates instantly what the pressure is removed. In some explosions you can see it due to the increased refraction of denser air, but this I think is condensation. Iím not an expert, just an engineer.
