State of emergency declared at Japan Nuclear Plant

BBC News - Japan quake: Radiation rises at Fukushima nuclear plant

Explosions at a Japanese quake-stricken nuclear plant have led to radiation levels that can affect human health, a senior Japanese official has said.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan has urged those living within 30km (18 miles) of the plant to stay indoors.

Earlier, reactor 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi plant was hit by a blast - the third reactor to explode in four days - leading to fears of a meltdown.... A fresh explosion rocked reactor 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi plant - 250km (155 miles) north-east of Tokyo - in the early hours of Tuesday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said, "Now we are talking about levels that can impact human health."...

All three reactors at Fukushima have exploded. Dangerous levels of radiation are now being expelled into the atmosphere. I encourage everyone to read the latest BBC article. The nuclear situation in Japan is growing more dire by the day, and although I do not believe that catastrophic failure is imminent, it is considerably more likely than it was two days ago.

URGENT: Radiation 1,000 times higher than normal detected at nuke plant

The amount of radiation reached around 1,000 times the normal level Saturday in the control room of the No. 1 reactor of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said.

The discovery suggests radioactive steam could spread around the facility operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co.

1,000 pennies are just $10.00. This article means absolutely nothing.

Dose RATE means something....so even tho Giant Noodle may usually be wrong, I wouldn't count this time as one of his times being wrong. But, the citizens living nearby won't likely be measurably affected. Operators will face much larger doses, but still are not likely to get sick or produce any mutations.
.
What radiation levels are considered safe?

Oh, those people actually working in the plants will be glowing if they spend too much time in there, but it isn't like the entire population of Sendai and Miyagi Prefecture and the area around Fukashima are going to be glowing or anything...

Actually, my own government in Taiwan is ticking me off much more now... This weekend, one of our governemnt people told us there is a 10% chance of radiation reaching Taiwan (complete BS) and now our Premier tells us that because we run gen-four plants (which don't exist yet), we aren't subject to the same problems these plants are... ARGH!!!! I can't wait until we can get rid of these losers next spring...

Politicians feel obligated to say SOMETHING, even when they know NOTHING.....

Yeah, but you would think the premier, who is responsible for internal policy, would know that we don't have gen-four plants because they don't exist yet... Hopefully they will be voted out next year...
