The normal radiation in the control room is probably measured in millirads, so 1000x normal radiation probably still wouldn't do you any significant harm. Generally speaking you want to keep your cumulative radiation exposure below 100 rad-hours, but most people survive 100 rad anyway... so it isn't necessarily a critical situation just yet.

The normal radiation count in the control room is probably measured in millirads, or even less. 1000x normal exposure probably still isn't dangerous.

Let's don't panic just yet.... "view with concern" perhaps.

5 nuclear reactors in trouble after Japan quake

TOKYO ó The situation surrounding Japanís earthquake-damaged nuclear power infrastructure grew more serious Saturday, as the Japanese government declared states of emergency at four more nuclear reactors and prepared to issue an unprecedented order to release radioactive vapor from a fifth to ease building pressure.

Concern on Friday had been focused on the No. 1 reactor at the Tokyo Electric Power Co.ís Fukushima Daiichi plant, which lost power after a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off Japanís northeast coast, unleashing a deadly tsunami that killed hundreds and caused widespread devastation.

Failure of a backup generator shut down the cooling system of the plantís 460-megawatt, No. 1 reactor.

Although a backup cooling system was being used, Japan's nuclear safety agency said pressure inside the reactor had risen to 1.5 times the level considered normal.

The Kyodo news agency says the cooling system has failed at three reactors at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture in northeastern Japan and that the coolant water's temperature has reached boiling level.Reuters) - Japanese officials may only have hours to cool reactors that have been disabled by Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami or face a nuclear meltdown.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) (9501.T) is racing to cool down the reactor core after a highly unusual "station blackout" -- the total loss of power necessary to keep water circulating through the plant to prevent overheating.

Im reading on another forum that it is inevitable that there will be at least one meltdown. Take it lightly though.

EDIT: Backup generators have been destroyed by the tsunami!!!

    It doesn't sound good.

Re: State of emergency declared at Japan Nuclear Plant

    Pressure and releases

Without enough power for cooling systems, decay heat from the reactor cores of units 1, 2 and 3 has gradually reduced coolant water levels through evaporation. The consequent increase in pressure in the coolant circuit can be managed via pressure release valves. However, this leads to an increase in pressure within the reactor building containment. Tepco has said that the pressure within the containment of Fukushima Daiichi 1 has reached around 840 kPa, compared to reference levels of 400 kPa.

The company has decided to manage this "for those units that cannot confirm certain levels of water injection" by means of a controlled release of air and water vapour to the atmosphere. Because this water has been through the reactor core, this would inevitably mean a certain release of radiation. The International Atomic Energy Agency said this would be filtered to retain radiation within the containment.

However, the company's monitoring of Fukushima Daiichi 1 has separately shown an increase in radiation levels detected emerging from the plant via routes such as the exhaust stack and the discharge canal.

Over the last several hours evacuation orders for local residents have been incrementally increased and now cover people living within ten kilometres of the power plant.

How large of a radius would a meltdown/explosion make uninhabitable?
