BBC and CNN are both reporting this as breaking news. No link yet.

I can't remember a time when so many earthquakes of this huge huge magnitude have hit around the world. And it is predicted that March 19th could be a bad day because the moon will be closer than it has been in 19 years.

We'll see. I hope this is wrong because the San Jacinto fault is only about 2 miles away.

Massive 7.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan

TOKYO -- A 7.9-magnitude earthquake has struck off Japan's northeastern coast, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and sending people out into the streets.

Japan's meteorological agency warns that a tsunami as high as 20 feet could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicenter.

The agency says the quake struck at 2:46 p.m. Friday at a depth of 6 miles, about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast.

TOKYO — A 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan's northeastern coast Friday afternoon, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and sending people out into the streets.

A tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii.

Japan's NHK says a small tsunami hit the shore near the epicenter around 3 p.m local time.

Smoke was seen rising from a port building engulfed in flames.

The agency says the quake struck at 2:46 p.m. Friday at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, about 240 miles northeast of Tokyo.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.

The tsunami alert has been officially issued for Japan and Russia. Officials are still investigating if Hawaii is at risk.

This quake has been upgraded to an 8.8 and Japan has been hit by a Tsunami that has caused a great deal of damage.

California is now at risk for a Tsunami as is the Philippines and a wide spread area of the Pacific Ocean

Both CNN and BBC are reporting this quake as an 8.8. Massive. Tsunami warnings have been issued.

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. An 8.8, this can not be good, if anything good can be taken from this is that it hit a well developed country with higher building standards. I'm hoping the loss of lives is minimal but you gotta imagine this is gonna be terrible.

Horrible, CNN is showing video of tsunami rushing into Japan. OMG. Massive, just massive. Thank god the quake was over 200 miles from Japan itself...

And this is the biggest city in the world...

Al-Jazeera says that the quake shook buildings as far away as Beijing.

Tsunami warnings now issued for Taiwan and Guam, as well as Japan and Russia. Hawaii may be at risk as well, although no warning has officially been issued yet.

What time was it there when it hit?

omg this is scary.. I hope I don't get an earthquake too

I'm amazed, but Al Jazeera live is on top of this again, blowing away CNN/BBC and the rest of the international media sites.

What time was it there when it hit?

Noon Friday.......

This is a Tsunami Information Statement for California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerouse to coasts outside the source region. The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center is investigating the event to determine the level of danger. More information will be issued as it becomes available.

At 9:46 PM Pacific Standard Time on March 10, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.9 occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

Pacific coastal regions outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska should refer to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center messages for information on the event.

Messages will be issued hourly by the WCATWC until the event status is upgraded to a warning or advisory, or until the center has determined that the event poses no threat to the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate forecasted times only, not that a wave dangerous to the U.S. and Canadian coasts was generated.)

I can't find anything about Hawaii getting an earthquake

My satellite syatem gets all the LA stations and they and Fos and CNN are nothing but the quake which has been ungraded ro 8.9 which is devastatingm for any place.

This is what we have been warned about here in California for years and I hope it never comes in my life because I don't think my weak heart could take it.

They said another earthquake hit Japan a few minutes ago too... It was off the coast and it was 7. something.. :(
