Whether or not there is a tsunami is going to depend on the type of slippage in the fault. If the slippage is mainly vertical, then you can expect tsunamis, but if it was horizontal, then no tsunami. Measurements of the quake is only strength, and no vectors can be detected with the technology we have today. However, since Japan is at the edge of a subduction zone, and subduction zone earthquakes do have mostly a vertical component, the probably of a major tsunami is rather high. No way to know for sure until tsunamis hit, if they have been generated.

Based on the footage, I think the Japanese are reacting with relative calm to the situation. It seems to be the western audience that is being all uppity, thanks to the media. I was just watching Al Jazeera and some British guy was saying things like, "The tsunami is eating everything in it's path, including whole cities!" It's like... how slimy can you get. Anything for ratings.

    Tsunami has hit Japan already.

Warning for all of the Pacific coast now. Keeping everyone in my thoughts! I am terrified of water (thank goodness I am in GA) and this would be my biggest fear.
Tsunami Watch issued for the US West Coast due to 8.9 earthquake in Japan. not Warning, Watch means potential danger, be prepared to take action. NOT as bad as a warning, which would mean high waves are imminent or occurring.. again. Tsunami Watch issued for the US West Coast due to 8.9 earthquake in Japan, no other information is available, listen to KBKW, 105.7 The Jet, Sunny 102.1 Bigfoot 93.7 or 107.9 The Quake for updates as they become available

A tsunami watch was issued for the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California as well as parts of Alaska.

A wave is on its way from Japan and is expected to hit between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. -- about 7:05 a.m. for the Washington coast, 7:12 a.m. on the southern Oregon coast and 7:24 a.m. along the California coast, forecasters say.

Early predictions indicate a wave of less than 3 feet.

That could cause low-level flooding, depending on the tides, as well as hazards for boaters, said Bill Steele, a University of Washington seismologist with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

"Stay away from the beach," Steele said. "Be smart about it. The water has a lot of power. Pay attention to your local emergency managers."

The wave is expected after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake off northeastern Japan.

It's hard watching this on tv and not being able to do anything to help. Let's hope everyone on the Pacific coasts is aware of what is happening.

You need to back down a little. You are getting mad at folks for reacting emtionally, and at the same time reacting extremely emotionally yourself using profanity and judging the motivations of others.

This is a serious event. I have been watching people die in real time on my computer. People are concerned. For the Japanese, the pacific coasts and the world.

There is no way to sensationalize this event. News channels dont have to worry about ratings. The whole world is watching.

No reason to expect from others what you obviously don't expect from yourself.

    Nuff said.

Well we need to wait to find full damage. I went to school with a girl whose parents were based in Japan. She used to talk about the 'tidal waves' they got so I think possibly Japan is more used to them and to dealing with them.
