I am watching news about it at the bar I am at since I don't have a TV. I knew the damage was bad, but I didn't think it was as bad as what they are showing. Sadly, I can afford to send them any more than what I already have.

Small tsunami, but no damage reported. Our government sent people home in at risk areas and made sure no one was in harms way. Fortunately, the Japanese island of Honshu is directly between us and the epicenter of the earthquake, so the effect was minimal...

Re: 8.9 earthquake strikes near Tokyo - Tsunami alert issued

My second friend has made contact. Everyone is relieved.

No country could be better prepared for this than Japan. Their culture of discipline ensures that everyone knows what to do and to stay orderly even in disaster. I think if this happened here, there would be widespread looting and violence due to panic.

Infrastructure wise, I am concerned about the North American west coast. When the big one some day hits there I don't know what we're going to do. Seattle and Vancouver for example had a 10 magnitude earthquake back in 1700 that sent a tsunami to Japan, and it happens every 200-300 years. (For those that don't know, magnitude 10 is 10 times stronger than a 9.) We're in the window for it happening right now.

Most buildings on the west coast are built to withstand a 7, but not huge tsunamis.
