8.9 earthquake strikes near Tokyo - Tsunami alert issued

I turned the news on for the kids at breakfast and we talked about it - they asked a lot of questions - and now they're fully knowledgable. My daughter is especially concerned about kids that were in school when it happened.

I think hiding life from kids leads them to believe the world is a pleasant, peaceful place - when it's not - and with my town experiencing small earthquakes lately they need to know the serious problems that some people face due to mother nature.

I've heard so many things that happened when I was a kid - and I knew none of it. I don't have a single recollection of any major world or national events: everything from political unrest to natural disasters. So I feel like I was robbed of reality and it bothers me that others have memories of a time and place - and none of my memories matter. There's nothing I can add into a discussion of my thoughts and feelings becaues I have none.

It's a void - and it bothers me a lot that my parents raised us that way.

Good parenting. Our kids know that this could as easily happen to us here as to Japan. We have earthquake drills at home a couple of times a year so everyone knows what to do. Fortunately, we don't live close enough to the coast to have a tsunami, but we have many friends who do.

My thoughts and prayers are with not only the people of Japan, but all those currently in that area. This is a massive disaster, politics don't mean **** in this.

I am watching news about it at the bar I am at since I don't have a TV. I knew the damage was bad, but I didn't think it was as bad as what they are showing. Sadly, I can afford to send them any more than what I already have.

In this part of the world, we don't have a choice... we know that this can happen... this could just as easily happen to us as to Japan... our building codes are much higher than in most of the world because of these problems... no one does it better than Japan, however...

How are things in Taiwan?

Small tsunami, but no damage reported. Our government sent people home in at risk areas and made sure no one was in harms way. Fortunately, the Japanese island of Honshu is directly between us and the epicenter of the earthquake, so the effect was minimal...

My second friend has made contact. Everyone is relieved.

No country could be better prepared for this than Japan. Their culture of discipline ensures that everyone knows what to do and to stay orderly even in disaster. I think if this happened here, there would be widespread looting and violence due to panic.

Infrastructure wise, I am concerned about the North American west coast. When the big one some day hits there I don't know what we're going to do. Seattle and Vancouver for example had a 10 magnitude earthquake back in 1700 that sent a tsunami to Japan, and it happens every 200-300 years. (For those that don't know, magnitude 10 is 10 times stronger than a 9.) We're in the window for it happening right now.

Most buildings on the west coast are built to withstand a 7, but not huge tsunamis.

UGH.

Looks like the #1 reactor is going to be a serious problem. :( :(

Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the earth's axis shifted 25 cm as a result of the earthquake, and the U.S. Geological Survey said the main island of Japan had shifted 2.4 meters.

Opps... time to update your maps and GPS devices...

Seriously, Honshu moved 2.4 meters!!! What would happen to the earth's axis if the earthquake was stronger??? perhaps one day we will have a superearthquake that will just send the earth tipping off its axis...

dang... I think a Martika song is in order.... "I feel the earth move, under my feet."

Holy crap. You invoked Martika....this is indeed serious.

Seriously, it is crazy that Honshu moved like that.

If anyone is following the news another 7.4 Earthquake has recently hit Japan off the coast the Miyagi Prefecture, which is located on the Northeastern part of Japan. Miyagi is being evacuated because of the coming tsunami.

The tsunami is predicted to have a wave 1m (3ft) high. Those in the warning zone should move to high ground, Japanese TV said. BBC

Today's quake was 118km (78 miles) north of Fukushima, 40km offshore in the Honshu area.

Magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits off Japan coast - Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review

My thoughts are with the brave and wonderful people of Japan. What is happening there is a tragic reminder of the dangers of Earthquakes and the importance of being prepared to deal with them as a nation. Out of compassion to fellow Human beings, i hope the international community pull together in this time of loss and destruction and do all that is possible to assist them.
