Prayers go out to the people of Japan.

Poor Peter King, no one will be watching his bigoted hearings.

What could have been a good post marred by... being you.

    For Shame Hazlnut.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

My sister pretty much kept the details of 9-11 from her kids which I didn't care for too much. I'll tell them straight up "some muslims that hate America killed innocent Americans and thus we went to war. That is the war that is finishing up right now."

I turned the news on for the kids at breakfast and we talked about it - they asked a lot of questions - and now they're fully knowledgable. My daughter is especially concerned about kids that were in school when it happened.

I think hiding life from kids leads them to believe the world is a pleasant, peaceful place - when it's not - and with my town experiencing small earthquakes lately they need to know the serious problems that some people face due to mother nature.

I've heard so many things that happened when I was a kid - and I knew none of it. I don't have a single recollection of any major world or national events: everything from political unrest to natural disasters. So I feel like I was robbed of reality and it bothers me that others have memories of a time and place - and none of my memories matter. There's nothing I can add into a discussion of my thoughts and feelings becaues I have none.

It's a void - and it bothers me a lot that my parents raised us that way.

I agree. I don't believe there is another country that is as well-prepared as Japan. On that point, The New York Times reports:

From seawalls that line stretches of Japanís coastline, to skyscrapers that sway to absorb earthquakes, to building codes that are among the worldís most rigorous, no country may be better prepared to withstand earthquakes than Japan.

Had any other populous country suffered the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that shook Japan on Friday, tens of thousands of people might already be counted among the dead. So far, Japanís death toll is in the hundreds, although it is certain to rise somewhat.

Hundreds killed in tsunami after 8.9 Japan quake

Hundreds killed in tsunami after 8.9 Japan quake

    This is bad....

A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes on record slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away ships, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control.

Hours later, the tsunami hit Hawaii but did not cause major damage. Warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West coast. In northeastern Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed.
The tsunami has already reached Hawaii, and California already. Japan just got hammered.
