As nations evacuate their citizens from the violence gripping Libya, many African migrant workers are targeted because they are suspected of being mercenaries hired by Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader.

Dozens of workers from sub-Saharan Africa are feared killed, and hundreds are in hiding, as angry mobs of anti-government protesters hunt down "black African mercenaries," according to witnesses.

About 90 Kenyans and another 64 citizens from South Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Zambia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone and Burundi landed in Nairobi on Monday, according to officials.

"We were being attacked by local people who said that we were mercenaries killing people. Let me say that they did not want to see black people," Julius Kiluu, a 60-year-old building supervisor, told Reuters.

The abandoned workers mainly from Ghana, Nigeria and Liberia, have become targets of Anti-Gaddafi protesters who believe "That Gaddafi brought the black people to fight them [Anti-Gaddafi protesters].”

“The Libyans, when they see the blacks, they will kill them. People in the neighborhood don’t want them here. Residents accuse them of being mercenaries for Gaddafi, and if they go out, some people might kill them," Shebany told reporters.

This is exactly what I was worried about happening if this conflict kept going and it now makes me leery of any talk about military intervention on the side of the rebels.

Now here's a job for Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Obama... they can whip out the race card.

I love the smell of insurrection in the morning. We should just let this play out.

Is that never justifiable? Frankly, I don't know enough about the issue to analyze it thoroughly, but assuming that this is a blatant attack on people for being sub-Saharan African, should the race issue just never be mentioned?
