The U.S. military is repositioning its forces near North Africa as the United States and its allies impose sanctions on Libya and consider whether to establish a no-fly zone over the country, where a resistance army is building against dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi.

Fox News has learned that the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise -- which was previously positioned off the coast of Somalia, where it was stationed to respond to a pirate hijacking -- has turned around and moved to the mouth of the Suez Canal in the Red Sea, heading in the direction of Libya -- with 15 detained pirates on board.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said the military is "repositioning" forces to be ready to assist in Libya. Most likely, U.S. forces would be asked to provide humanitarian relief, though no decision has been made and the State Department has not yet made a request to the military, Lapan said.

A senior U.S. military official told Fox News that the Enterprise has not yet been ordered to move through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea, describing the aircraft carrier as one "option" available to the military as the situation in Libya develops.

"We are exploring all options and moving assets in case they are needed," the official said.

Very! Very! Interesting.

I'm all for it.

Good thing we have forces in the region that can respond.

Gotta make sure its oil assets remain in tact and that leadership transfers to a desirable candidate.

That's not going to happen with the establishment of a no-fly zone.

Ask Obama....

I just want that malicious dickhead to stop bombing his own people.

Too bad we have that pain-in-the-ass law that prevents assissinations. Eh?

This is good news and I support Obama's decision to send this ship over there. I hope the Libyans can be liberated from their evil dictatorial regime.

as always, we should be careful what we wish for. although i agree, the people should get what they want, the whole ME is a hornet's right now. we don't know who will emerge as leaders and with what ideals.

I agree. I do not want to see massive US intervention and another occupation like with Iraq in Libya. I would support allowing the people to select a leader that they chose.

You can bet there is U.S. intervention. Gotta make sure the cards fall where you want them. The Russians are probably in there too, and MI5, and who knows what else.

People aren't just going to let this unfold randomly.

Got to be ready to go in if the oil wells are threatened, right?

Without gaurds posted at the actual well locations, we won't have enough to time to react to a threat on the oil wells.

I agree. The U.S. foreign policy has been so inconsistent in this administration. I agree Russia, China, England and of course France is in the mix. I just don't think any of those entities are talking to the U.S. which is not boding well for us.

IMO, the military assets are probably being positioned to support a range of activities i.e., enforcement of any no-fly zones that might be created, delivery of humanitarian aid, etc., that do not include an invasion/military operation targeted at the Gadhafi dictatorship. I do not believe that the U.S. or NATO will carry out a military operation or invasion aimed at toppling the Gadhafi dictatorship. First, there is no overriding national interest for the U.S./NATO members to use military force to topple the Gadhafi dictatorship. Second, if the social media is reasonably representative (there is very little actual media coverage from Libya other than the state media that is controlled by the dictatorship), those seeking to topple the dictatorship have been explicit about wanting to do it themselves and without foreign intervention. Third, foreign intervention could allow the dictatorship to actually garner some support from quarters of Libyan society in that it would position itself as fighting against a foreign invasion so to speak. Currently, its arguments of international and Al Qaeda responsibility for the rise and spread of Libya's opposition movement are inaccurate and widely seen as lacking credibility.

That's going to depend on the level of success that the anti-government forces achieve. If the pro-government forces appear to be winning, then the anti-government folks may be begging for foreign intervention.

Wait, isn't Obama going to wait for a UN resolution for permission to use force? Where is the official declaration of war?
