Iran told atomic inspectors this week that it had run into a serious problem at a newly completed nuclear reactor that was supposed to start feeding electricity into the national grid this month, raising questions about whether the trouble was sabotage, a startup problem, or possibly the beginning of the project’s end.

In a report on Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran told inspectors on Wednesday that it was planning to unload nuclear fuel from its Bushehr reactor — the sign of a major upset. For years, Tehran has hailed the reactor as a showcase of its peaceful nuclear intentions and its imminent startup as a sign of quickening progress.

But nuclear experts said the giant reactor, Iran’s first nuclear power plant, now threatens to become a major embarrassment, as engineers remove 163 fuel rods from its core.

Iran gave no reason for the unexpected fuel unloading, but it has previously admitted that the Stuxnet computer worm infected the Bushehr reactor. On Friday, computer experts debated whether Stuxnet was responsible for the surprising development.

Russia, which provided the fuel to Iran, said earlier this month that the worm’s infection of the reactor should be investigated, arguing that it might trigger a nuclear disaster . Other experts said those fears were overblown, but noted that the full workings of the Stuxnet worm remained unclear.

To me it doesn't really matter if the setback is sabotage, a startup problem, or what ever. The only thing that matters is that it's a setback, because that is great news.

The peace of the world depends on Iran not having a Nuke.

It's too bad we have the weakest possible person at the helm at a time when we need someone less apologetic and much more forceful in charge.

Instead of fear Obama's persona provokes laughter.

You'd rather a warmonger?

We need another President Reagan!

America is the only country that should have nukes.

" Iran’s first nuclear power plant has been attacked by a sophisticated computer worm designed to disrupt power grids and other industrial facilities using SCADA systems. The worm, however, hasn’t caused any damage but did succeed in infecting computers.

It has been suggested that the worm, which hit the Bushehr nuclear power plant, is the work of Israeli hackers."

Not sure if the current issues are related to the "Stuxnet virus" attack 6 months ago. But would be a reasonable suspicion. Check the links. Fascinating story and a big win for the "good guys".....;)

Relax conservatives, they can't even get a nuclear power plant up and running without major problems. How do you expect them to actually create a nuke and then be able to transport it to its desired target..

this reply wreaks of bigotry.

are you saying Iranians are too stupid to accomplish this?

Actually yeah, dont put them down, they try hard and have much larger barriers to deal with as far as building a reactor than we do.

Stuxnet is pretty awesome for what it accomplished, but also terrifying. It represents the first time that computer malware has been used to sabotage real-world machinery. A couple weeks ago Stuxnet was leaked publicly to the hacker communities of the world. How long before some variant/spinoff of Stuxnet starts taking down OUR energy grid? The thought is quite scary, and IMO our government isn't doing enough to guard against that possibility.

Utterly delusional comment. We have the strongest President in the White House than we've had in generations.

at a time when we need someone less apologetic and much more forceful in charge.

So you don't care what he actually does, you're just interested in the superficial image he puts out in soundbites. Your strategic acumen is not impressing me.

First of all, a President of the United States is not supposed to evoke fear - he is supposed to evoke respect and admiration. Perhaps you are thinking of a Soviet premier or an Afghan warlord as your models of strength - pompous, bellowing thugs who go around banging their shoes on a table and threatening Apocalypse over the slightest disagreements. But see, the world had more than its fill of that under George W. Bush's unique brand of psycho nutjob, and nobody liked what came of it. Now the adults are back, and the kiddies are just gonna have to grin and bear it.

And Skynet is born.

America is the only country that should have nukes.
why's that again? because they know how to use them? they still remain the only country in the world that has inflicted nuclear devastation on a nation not just once, but twice.

i absolutely do not want Iran or any others to have nuclear weapon access. if they can't be completely rid of then the goal should be to at the very least minimize nuclear arsenals (ourselves included) and raise treaties so it's an across the board agenda for all to follow and participate in.

Although I think that the west, with its own snug arsenal of nukes, doesn't really have a right to tell the rest of the world they can't have 'em, it doesn't break my heart that Iran is having problems with their nuclear program.

Sooner or later, however, they will have nukes. Eventually I see every country on the planet except the poorest 3rd world nations having them. This is the 21st century. The technology is practically on the internet. *shrug* Not much anyone can do.
