GOP threatening to shut down government, but say it will be Dems fault

If the government is shutdown, will the GOP get their demands?

  • Total voters

Actually, that chart shows only total government revenue, not simply federal tax revenue, which is what we are discussing.

Add in an adjustment for inflation and suddenly BAM! Clinton levels were higher that Bush levels. Or, if we want to look at it as a percentage of the GDP, suddenly Clinton soars over Bush.

.....Federal tax revenue went up....after one of The Largest Tax Cuts In History. Defying the laws of liberal economics......

.......not really.....

And besides this isnt a revenue problem were facing......its a drunken liberal crack whore on a spending binge problem.

What a bunch of BS. If the government shuts down because they can't work out a mutually agreeable budget, then it is everyone's fault. Democrats, republicans, and independents all three. A compromise requires that both sides be willing to give a little.

I consider this to be one of the biggest problems in our country today. Our political system is so polarized, hardly anyone is willing to work with the other side to get things done.

And the moment they do try to work with the other side for the benefit of the country, they are calling RINO, DINO or whatever.

Exactly... no accountability from either side, but I have always hated the "you made me do it" defense. Come the f*** on! The GOP are not victims in this situation. They can actively fight for their budget and goals in more ways than just this one... All they are doing is holding the American people at state gunpoint. Everybody did not elect them, so they should work with the elected officials the people also elected. The government shouldn't even have the power to say, we'll govern and do want we want or we do nothing for the American people..

The largest majority of Americans in 60+ years voted the Republicans into control, because they were dissatisfied with what the Democrats were doing. The will of the people says to not just sit back and let the Democrats keep on keepin' on. The will of the people says to stop this crap and the Democrats should be taking notice.

This is exactly the kind of attitude that causes these problems. The congress that is in place is the one that we as a country voted there. It is a split congress with the democrats controlling one house and the republicans controlling the other. That means the two sides should work together to come to a mutually agreeable compromise. It does not mean that the democrats should bow down and let the republicans do whatever they want.

The only reason it's a split congress, is because there weren't anough senate seats up for grabs to elect more Republicans.

It's quite obvious that the American people didn't vote to keep the status quo.

This is certainly possible, but it's only speculation.

And they don't have the status quo now. Saying the democrats should roll over and let the republicans do what they want because 'it's the will of the American people' is just an excuse, and a fairly lame one at that. It's not like a huge majority of the American populace supports the republican agenda over the democratic agenda. The country is, and always has been, split roughly 50-50 along party lines. We now have a congress that actually represents that.

When Obama made the argument of "well I got elected, you didn't" conservatives were in an uproar about it. Hypocricy much?

Were you sleeping during the midterms? It's the biggest rollover of power in this country in 60+ years. It's a fact, that the people have spoken and they didn't say, "oh yeah, just keep going hog-wild like you have been for the past few years".

When Obama said, "We won", the Libbos were like, "Yeah! We won!". Doesn't sound so cool, anymore. Does it?

And yet, in all of the seats that the republicans won, a significant portion of the people in those states voted democrat as well. 30-49% in most cases. I stand by what I said. While the republicans might have won a lot of seats in the election, the overall political makeup of the country is split pretty evenly.

The 2010 election did not put the republicans solely in power. There is a split congress, and the other party still holds the presidency. They can't (and shouldn't) behave like the democrats should roll over and obey all of their demands. Both parties need to compromise.

It's a fact, that the people have spoken and they didn't say, "oh yeah, just keep going hog-wild like you have been for the past few years".

You should stop pretending like everyone in the country supports that ideology. It makes you look ignorant.

how is it making threats to send up funding bills and then ask Democrats to pass them so that the government can keep functioning? it's Democrats who are threatning this government with shut-down; assuming that "because they won that battle in the 90's" that they will win it now.

But i don't think they will. If Republicans hold to cutting spending, I think they win this fight.

That doesn't even make sense to me... All of the reports I have read, it's the GOP who appears to support a government shutdown, not the dems.

The GOP won the House, the House sets spending. Welcome to a Representative Republic, enjoy your stay.

The approval of legislation goes through the Senate and President, not just house... The people didn't elect all republicans, so the GOP doesn't have a license to run the President and Senate over. It's a Representative Republic indeed... The GOP is acting just like the liberals did after the 2008 elections... we won, we get what we want and the GOP cried "they are cramming it down our throats. Unfair! Unfair!"

The country doesn't belong to either party or one type of person... and IMO the government shouldn't even have the power to shutdown and make everybody suffer so some partisans can pass some bill. What if Obama shut down the government in order to pass health care, or Bush did it because privatizing Social Security was going his way?

My view is that a party has as much power and mandate as they have bodies elected. However, the ONLY reason for that is the numbers, not any sort of moral force behind it. I didn't like it when Bush or Obama claimed a mandate and I don't really care for those who claim a mandate now, because it is only a talking point when the only thing that matters is numbers.

Yeah...maybe they should run away to another country......maybe they could just vote to "deem a budget passed"......or maybe just "ignore the budget".......it worked for Democrats

.....less than 20% of America voted for The Kenyan Tyrant.......where has this concern been for the last 2 years?

I was initially confused by who the Kenyan Tyrant was you keep complaining about.... so only 20% of the people voted for him and 80% for Mccain? How did that work.. voter fraud and ACORN?

Whats the point in even responding to a birther? Its like talking to a dining room table ;)

On Nov. 2, 2010--The Largest Political Ass Whooping in history........The overwhelming majority of the American people decided to give control of the House of Representatives to the Republicans.........specifically Republicans that ran on cutting government spending.

Spending bills originate in the house.......deal with it......

That's what the Democrats said after the 2008 election... They thought they were right and it was a referendum on Republican politics, and that's what they said in the news all the time too.

Were the election results a referendum on Republican principles?

Neither party has changed, and neither party is good... Look at the shape America is in right now, and it's the work of both parties. The voters go one way to the next, because it's all there is to vote for... not because one party is suddenly right. That's hysterical. Neither party has really changed, if anything both sides have gotten more extreme and stubborn in their ways.

42% Conservative--39% Independent--19% Liberal.......

BTW... "the largest majority of 60+ years old" is far from a general description of "the people." I believe in the 2008 election the GOP won the majority of seniors and the majority of white men, but that's it... I fall into neither of those categories, a lot of people don't. Neither the GOP or the dems control the direction of this country, the people do and 60+ is far from all the people.

There were enough Senate seats up for the GOP to also take over the Senate... but the GOP candidates didn't win. Somebody even beat a Tea Partier with a write in campaign. A write in campaign! That says a lot...
