On prank call, Wis. governor discusses strategy - Yahoo! News

MADISON, Wis. – On a prank call that quickly spread across the Internet, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was duped into discussing his strategy to cripple public employee unions, promising never to give in and joking that he would use a baseball bat in his office to go after political opponents.

Walker believed the caller was a conservative billionaire named David Koch, but it was actually the editor of a liberal online newspaper. The two talked for at least 20 minutes — a conversation in which the governor described several potential ways to pressure Democrats to return to the Statehouse and revealed that his supporters had considered secretly planting people in pro-union protest crowds to stir up trouble.

On the call, the governor said he was ratcheting up the pressure on Senate Democrats to return to the Capitol a week after they fled to block the legislation. He said he supported a move to require them to come to the Capitol to pick up their paychecks rather than have the money deposited directly.

He also floated an idea to lure Democratic senators back to the Capitol for negotiations and then have the Senate quickly pass the bill while they are in talks.

Walker said aides were reviewing whether the GOP could hold a vote if Democrats were not physically in the Senate chamber but elsewhere in the building. At the news conference, he insisted that idea was not a trick but an effort to get Democrats back to work.

Democrats seized on Walker's recorded comments as evidence that the governor plans to go beyond budget cuts to crushing unions.

The remarks showed Walker's private relationship with David Koch. He and his brother, Charles, own Koch Industries Inc., which is the largest privately-owned company in America and has significant operations in Wisconsin.

Its political action committee gave $43,000 to Walker's campaign, and David Koch gave $1 million to the Republican Governors' Association, which funded ads attacking Walker's opponent in last year's election.

The Kochs also give millions to support Americans For Prosperity, a conservative business group that launched a $320,000 television ad campaign in favor of Walker's legislation Wednesday. When the caller asked how he could help, Walker suggested outside groups could try to influence people to call their lawmakers and spread the message that his proposal is necessary.

On the recording, after Walker said he would be willing to meet with Democratic leaders, the caller said he should bring a baseball bat to negotiations.

Why is this breaking news? Shouldn't this just be under general politics? A prank call is national news? Really?

So it sounds like Walker said exactly what he's been saying in the Press and on television interviews.

I don't see anything particularly revealing here. We already knew all this.

I know, we should be outraged he proposed possibly using people in a dishonest way to push an agenda! Who would do such a thing? Only evil vile conservatives!

...wait how'd these "revelations" come to light again?

What does that matter? Regarding the whole ACORN thing, the fake pimp suit and undercover video wasn't the issue, it was cutting of the tape to remove context.

Since when do two wrongs make a right again?

This thread is NOT about ACORN.

It most certainly is. It exposes Walker for what he truly is - an ideological right winger who is pursuing an extremist agenda which will help destroy America as we know it. He is no less than that.

The only thing it does is expose his public words are the same as his private words - in short, he's genuine when he speaks.

Help destroy America.... BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Zyphlin kinda makes an important point here. Not sure if it is the point he was going for, but it's still an important point. It is sad when people have to go around pretending to be others to gather information to hurt their opponents. It's sad when done by some on the right to go after their targets, and it is equally sad here. We should be condemning any one who stoops to these types of tactics, on either side. How you win is just as important as winning.

How mad was Zyphlin or Ockham during the ACORN scandal? I disagree with you anyway, it is just undercover work. I don't think Dateline NBC's: To Catch a Predator is sad because they trick pedophiles.

My point was, actually, an equally sad one. This type of "false flag" political activity, which I don't really find "unethical" but I find a bit low, isn't exactly unusual or unheard of on either side so my condemnation and care about it isn't something that rises to a really high level. Its about a step up from mudslinging now, which is sad in and of itself.

The biggest issue too is how sincere he is on some of those things becomes questionable because of the way they're obtained. People bluff, bluster, and bull**** about theoretical things or mused about things for all sorts of reasons OTHER than honestly suggesting them when talking to someone who they trust. I think most people can probably admit that when talking amongst friends they've probably talked up a situation as to how they reacted or would react that, when looking at it with a realistic view, you're going to act different. Its like talking to someone going "I swear, I'm going to go in there and tell the Boss a piece of my mind and why this project is so stupid. Really let him have it and point out all the flaws he stupidly put in it" to some co-worker friends but in reality you know damn well that the most you'll do is politely suggest to your boss you go about it another way. Whether this is honest suggestions of truthful attempts or bluff and bluster is impossible to really know, because its all based off of a fake presentation.

Someone lied about their identity in a very specific way to get someone to tell them information that is questionable in nature but also questionable in its legitimacy.

If the governor actually DID have them pass a bill while the Democrats simply were in the capital building, then I'd be raising holy hell about the guy and what a crook he is. Him stating it to some random big wig isn't something I'm going to scream about, because it could be as much trying to puff his chest out with bull**** bluster towards a big name person as it was any kind of serious plan.

In short - he is aright wing True Believer wacko who will destroy working Americans lives if he and his ilk get their way.

Probably would need to go back and check my things, but I think Brietbart is generally a somewhat scummy type of guy. I had bigger problems with those people in ACORN then I have with this governor, but that's because they actually performed some sort of official action than simply stated the possibility of things that might possibly happen. I would also have less issue if this guy called up presenting himself as a generic republican donor and got this out of him, rather than presenting himself as a specific person which has more specific implications rather than broader ones.

way off topic, and way too personal for me usually to comment on

but chris hanson's predator physically makes me cringe

in my opinion, one must almost be a sadist to watch it

journalism as low as the sexual abuse of children, my opinion

please carry on, please take no note of my view of this zoomed in crucifixion of those who but for the grace of...

you're starting to lose it, brother

you're so shrill, coming off as a loser

i thought you were a lot better, i still think you are

stay up

I wonder what would happen if Obama was caught having a private conversation with Rahm Emmanuel discussing planting some of his people in Sarah Palin events. FOX News and conservatives would have a field day talking about Chicago style politics and how corrupt Obama is. I guess since it's not a Democrat politician doing this, it's not a big deal.

Sorry that you cannot take evil being branded for what it is. Reminds me of that movie with Cruise and Nicholson in the military court.

Their attitude is entirely irrelevant to my beliefs.

Not to mention, are we seriously comparing getting a politician to talk tough to a party donor to catching people attempting to **** 10 year olds?

Some what different situation I grant you. I actually don't care for "to catch a predator"...not that they try and catch predators, but it does not to my mind belong on TV.

I am just talking about misrepresenting oneself as to try and catch someone doing something wrong. If you have a better real-life scenario I'd be glad to hear it. How about that show "Bait Car" where cops leave a car running on purpose to see if someone jumps in?

I don't know, and I don't care. It's not about the prank call, it's about what he said. Besides the bat thing, it certainly appeared that he attempted to get more campaign money, not just for himself, but also his comrades during the conversation:

WATCHDOG EXPLORING CAMPAIGN FINANCE AND ETHICS LAW-BREAKING BY SCOTT WALKER DURING FAKE CALL WITH BILLIONAIRE
Relevant section (At the 4 minute mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3a2pYGr7-k)

Gov. Walker: “After this in some of the coming days and weeks ahead, particularly in some of these more swing areas, a lot of these guys are going to need, they don’t need initially ads for them, but they’re going to need a message out. Reinforcing why this was a good thing to do for the economy, a good thing to do for the state. So to the extent that message is out over and over again is certainly a good thing.”

Ian Murphy (posing as David Koch): “Right, right. We’ll back you any way we can.”

As David Donnelly pointed out:

“In a call with who he thought to be billionaire political donor David Koch, Gov. Walker may have broken campaign finance and ethics laws,” said David Donnelly, national campaigns director for Public Campaign Action Fund. “If he did, he should resign.

“If you didn’t believe it before, you have to now—this fight isn’t about the budget, it’s about favors for corporate special interests,” continued Donnelly. “If Wisconsin law forbids coordination with political donors similar to federal law, Gov. Scott Walker is not just in political trouble, but in legal hot water.”

you're branding me and mine as evil

more power to you, of course

seeya at the polls, on the up and up

Really? Walker has said in television interviews that his camp thought about using plants to stir up trouble at protests? Sounds like you were watching something else.
