BBC News - Saudi king offers benefits as he returns from treatment

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has announced increased benefits for his citizens, as he returned after months abroad getting medical treatment.

There will be extra funds for housing, studying abroad and social security, according to state television.

King Abdullah has been away from the country for three months, during which time mass protests have changed the political landscape of the Middle East.

There have been few demonstrations in Saudi Arabia.

Will King Abdullah be able to protect Saudi Arabia from the wave of ME protests that are sweeping across the region with money? So far buying the public has seemed to do little, though the Abdullah has a much firmer grip on his population.
 
Saudi Arabias security aparutus is very strong, the royal family is very well established, for their to be a revolution in Saudi Arabia, you'd need a quick and overwhelming movement, it would have to be so large and so swift as to overwhelm what is now probably a very, very well prepared force to deal with any problems. The Saudi Royal Family can see the way the wind is blowing, they've been in charge for a long time, they are very affluent and very large and they're not going down without a fight.

Didn't Ghaddafi also seem to have an iron grip on his population too? At the weekend he was threatening ruthless and swift treatment of any protestors and by yesterday afternoon he was cutting a comical figure under his parasol and floppy eared hat on Libyan TV.

What current events are showing is that nobody there is safe.

42 years of power, I'm assuming what happened was he got complacent. Plus we're not sure how quickly and how large the original protests were because no one was in the country to see it. as I said, uprisings in Saudi Arabia are not impossible, but they would require a massive turnout and swift action.

If Saudi Arabia goes down you will have to take out a loan to fill your gas tank because we are headed for $10 a gallon gas.

If this happens the price of everything will skyrocket. If you have been paying attention at all you have noticed that food prices have been on the way up for months and it is going to get ugly.

Obema has been a complete and total failure and so far has done not one damn thing right yet.

I don't see this Amateur saying a word about what is going on as the middle east burns.

Its been at least a little while since I was there, but several years ago...they not only have a pretty decent security force but they bribe their religous leaders to ensure they dont stir **** up too badly. They provide(d) housing and subsistence. The truly 'poor' there are third country nationals...people with no real rights or status. i would be very surprised to see SA go the way of Libya.
