Chicago (CNN) -- Rahm Emanuel, the former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, won the Chicago mayoral election over five other challengers Tuesday, topping the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff vote, CNN projects.

With almost 75% of the vote counted, Emanuel had almost 55% of the vote, far outdistancing his rivals.

Former Chicago School Board head Gery Chico was in second place with 25%, while City Clerk Miguel del Valle had 9% and former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun had more than 8%. The other two candidates both had less than 2%.

While Tuesday's vote was technically the Democratic primary, there is no Republican contender in the heavily Democratic city, so Emanuel will succeed Richard M. Daley in the top job long associated with the Daley family.

Daley has been mayor since 1989, and his father held the post from 1955-76, making them the two longest-serving mayors in the city's history.

Emanuel, 51, started his campaign in November as a relative unknown to many in his native city, despite having served three terms as a congressman, being a key aide to President Bill Clinton and Obama's chief of staff.

Rahm will do very well for Chicago. This is a great victory for the people of the Windy City.

Blacks voted for him!

Jews voted for him!

He had 10,000 people at his rallies! Not 15K!

He's crooked and rigged the machines himself!

He hates white people!

Zorggist Jew!

Just wanted to make sure we got all the stupid right wing responses to this out of the way.

Good for him. He ran a strong campaign and beat his opponent.

A city that has a population that is 61% minorites and Rahmbeaux comes in promising a free meal ticket. Nope, no surprise that he won.

No surprise at all. Once the supremes threw out the silly residency challenge, he was a shoo-in.

****cago..........you deserve every bit of whats coming.

They want what's coming...a free ride. 10% of Chicargoins are out of work. No sweat, Rahmbeaux is going to give them all an unemployment check.

How partisan do you have to be to think that:
A) 61% is a minority
B) Racist enough to think minorties, by the fact they are minorities, vote for some because they want the government to feed them

Because it's a fact that 61% of Chicago's population is made up of minorities. Look it up.

B) Racist enough to think minorties, by the fact they are minorities, vote for some because they want the government to feed them

Didn't take long for someone to call me a racist. I saw it coming, so it's no big deal.

You don't find anything remotely racist in saying that the reason minorities voted for somebody is because they're poor and want money? Seriously?

Ok lets do this again:
Dictionary.com | Free Online Dictionary for English Definitions
1) Minority: noun
1.
the smaller part or number; a number, part, or amount forming less than half of the whole.
3.
a group differing, especially in race, religion, or ethnic background, from the majority of a population

2) Majority: noun
1.
the greater part or number; the number larger than half the total ( opposed to minority)

You can see by the definition of majority that to be considered a majority the portion of the whole must be the greater part of the division AND larger than half the total. If we say 61% are minorities it means by default there is no majority since no remaining part can be greater than the whole, so even if the largest part of the division, lets say that the remaining 39% in this case, are all part of the same category they still do not constitute a majority because they are not larger than half of the total, ie greater than 50%. Therefore there is no majority and certainly 61% cannot constitute a minority.

Now look at the 3rd definition of minority, it specifically refers to race as its quite clear you did as well when you said minority.
Racism can be defined thusly:
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement

By saying a member of a certain race, or members of certain races, in this case minorities(by your usage of the word) behave in a certain way by virtue of being members of that race or races, again in this case those races which in your view constitute the "minority," is racism. And since the word racist definition and describes a person who adheres to belief defined as racism, you have made a racist comment which I think quite clearly came from your heavily partisan influenced view of the world.

You never let a serious crisis go to waste.-Rahm Emanuel...I guess he took his own advice. Lets see what really happens in that corrupted city.

Glad to see leftist Chicago politics work there magic to even let this man be in the running, they made the right decision the first time throwing his dumba** out of the election, but why does it seem that some strings were pulled in order to get him back in the election? You knew the guy was going to win, Chicago is the only reason this so called state of Illinois is even liberal. The last mid-term election 98 out of 102 counties were Republican.

Rahm Emanuel: Experts say not a legal resident of Chicago, cannot run for mayor - Lynn Sweet
Sunday, Rahm Emanuel announced in a video posted on a website that he is preparing to run for mayor of Chicago. But two of Chicago's top election lawyers say the state's municipal code is crystal clear that a candidate for mayor must reside in the town for a year before the election.

How stupid is this state? No wonder we successfully passed California in being the worst economic state per captia, not to mention were well in front when it comes to drowning in public pensions debt. Take a look at the numbers, it will astound you.

Illinois Pension Fund $61 Billion Underwater; State Borrows Money For 2010 Contribution; California $20 Billion in the Hole Again

Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis: Illinois Pension Fund $61 Billion Underwater; State Borrows Money For 2010 Contribution; California $20 Billion in the Hole Again

This was the lowest voter turnout for a mayoral election in Chicago in at least 35 years. Nevertheless, Emanuel did surpass the 50%+1 vote percentage as required by law. As far as city demographics, Emanuel won the white/black/Latino vote triad. He ran on a grassroots platform of prioritizing education and more police in the street, two issues that are paramount to all Chicagoans. I believe Emanuel is the first Jewish mayor of the city.

Rahm will do very well for Chicago. This is a great victory for the people of the Windy City.

Yes, it's a new age in Chicago, and new horizon to a new future. They'll be going where no people have gone before. I can see the vision, and the vision is the people; and the people are the vision, and vice versa. The dawning of a new world is at hand, because Rahm is.....well he's Rahm. It's the Age of Aquarius.

:lamo

So what the **** does anyone here actually know about Chicago or Rahm's campaign to justify their opinions, whether that he's a savior or that he's going to raze the city to the ground? Seriously does anyone actually know anything about this city? All I see is a bunch of partisans who've already got their opinion decided but forgot that critical step of getting actual knowledge to back it up. We might as well be talking about the new mayor of the ****ing moon because most people are here for a partisan fight and everything other than party identity and preformed opinions seems completely irrelevant. Just another excuse for a partisan fight and nothing more, the actual subject is entirely meaningless because the same "arguments" and phrases will get dragged out by both sides except for a few name changes.

For example:
Yes, it's a new age in Chicago, and new horizon to a new future. They'll be going where no people have gone before. I can see the vision, and the vision is the people; and the people are the vision, and vice versa. The dawning of a new world is at hand, because Rahm is.....well he's Rahm. It's the Age of Aquarius.
is just the same old crap we've heard before except it was
Yes, it's a new age in America, and new horizon to a new future. They'll be going where no people have gone before. I can see the vision, and the vision is the people; and the people are the vision, and vice versa. The dawning of a new world is at hand, because Obama is.....well he's Obama. It's the Age of Aquarius.

Same meaningless BS

Rahm will do very well for Chicago. This is a great victory for the people of the Windy City.
is just like
Obama will do very well for America. This is a great victory for the people of the United States

Chicago is well and truly ****ed.
America is well and truly ****ed.

I dont even have to change that one its been in so many topics before its not new to anyone.
Well hopefully you all get the idea, its the same partisan crap and message from both sides we've heard forever and always shows itself at its worst when no one actually understands the issue.

The outcome was a sure as a federal government meeting staffed with $20 dollar whores.

Is anyone really surprised? Why didn't they just suspend the election and save the money? Chicago is hurting financially.

You don't find anything remotely racist in saying that the reason minorities voted for somebody is because they're poor and want money? Seriously?

Nope. Sho' 'nuff don't. The truth's a mother****er, sometimes.

Well you knew he had it in the bag when he circumvented the residency laws... But what does that say about the Obama administration when internal fighting led to rahm calling it quits as chief of staff?

This dude is a cancer.
