    Re: Hero's unwelcome

Once again, the academic contempt for our military rears its ugly head. I believe in the value of a good education and even the so-called "liberal" education in philosophy and the humanities, but far too many of the people providing that education use their privileged position to poison young minds against the values of patriotism and service. The universities need to be purged.

    Re: Hero's unwelcome

I have a hard time having any respect for the American military (or any military for that matter) after watching the movie Winter Soldier. But I don't see any reason to show any disrespect towards this man. I also don't see any reason to show any reverence towards him. I do have some respect for believing in something so much you'd lay down your life for it. I don't think anyone should try to influence young minds towards any political position, simply give them them unbiased knowledge and let them choose for themselves. I think we try to glorify the military far too much in this country, and refuse to acknowledge all the negative aspects of it's efforts. Not enough people see the side of the people we've in invaded. Look at those unexploded American dropped bombs in Laos that continue to kill innocent civilians to this day. We need to accept the fact that the American military isn't any more moral than any other. We don't need to glorify it in the eyes of our young either.

People who are willing to risk life and limb to serve our nation deserve glory.

Why do they deserve glory? Why does serving our nation warrant respect? Does it matter what happens in the pursuit of serving our nation? No, as long as it's in the nation's best interest it must be right. Our nation doesn't look so great to the people getting blown up.

We glorify it so that we can entice the stupid young people in our country to go get shot at so that we can strip other countries of their natural resources. It's better to say they are heros fighting for freedom and to make the world a safer and more democratic place than tell them the truth that they are just pawns we use to enforce our political and economic agendas on the world.

People who defend us deserve every ounce of respect you have. Let's get down to basics... Think about when you go to sleep at night... you lay down. Enjoy the compfy mattress and warm blankets... maybe even cuddle with a loved one. Well next time you do lay down to sleep remember. thousands of miles away theres a young men and women who would lay their own blood into the ground so you and yours are safe. I think that makes them worthy of respect regardless. A soldier gives up freedom to protect yours.

I'm a little more inclined to think our nuclear arsenal has something to do with our unimpeded freedom in this modern age than a soldier riding in a Humvee out in the middle of Afghanistan. Tell ya what, which one do you think we could give up and still be here tomorrow?

The fact is that since the Cold War, the days of soldiers fighting for our freedom have gone extinct. It's nothing but a relic of a bygone age. Soldiers now fight to maintain our economic and political supremacy.

I'd Try not to tread in such areas. Trying to convince people of government corruption and control immediately makes one a conspiracy theorist in their eyes, from my experiences anyway.

I am sorry I would have to disagree. My family has been in some sort of military for as long as there has been an American military. They sign up to defend us from foreign and domestic terrorist. If we had no military, do you think we would be sitting here debating this? I am sure some country would try out their new big boy pants and try to defeat America. Now I understand why some people cant wrap their heads around this proud feeling some of us get when speaking of the military..they just dont get it. Which is ok , but I can tell you those men and women out there have our freedom in their minds...and know they are defending it no matter the cost.

I don't want them to believe me. I want them to be stupid and go get shot at or allow their kids to go get shot at so that I can continue to pay less at the gas pump than Europe. I have no guilt about it whatsoever. The government exists to serve the people, and maintaining our supremacy is a valid goal. If we have to suppress a few countries, install a few dictators, fabricate intelligence so we can preemptively attack resource rich nations, etc. then fine. Better us than them.
