Judge Convicted for Jailing Juveniles to "Jail for Profit" Prisons

SCRANTON, Pa. A former juvenile court judge who sent thousands of children to detention centers was convicted Friday of racketeering for taking a $1 million kickback from the builder of the for-profit lockups, in what prosecutors said was a "kids for cash" scheme that ranks among the biggest courtroom frauds in U.S. history.

Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella, 61, left the bench in disgrace two years ago after he and a second judge, Michael Conahan, were accused of using juvenile delinquents as pawns in a plot to get rich. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has dismissed 4,000 juvenile convictions issued by Ciavarella, saying he sentenced young offenders without regard for their constitutional rights.

Federal prosecutors accused Ciavarella and Conahan of taking more than $2 million in bribes from the builder of the PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care detention centers and extorting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the facilities' co-owner.

A federal jury in Scranton convicted Ciavarella of 12 counts, including racketeering, money laundering and conspiracy, but acquitted him of 27 counts, including extortion. He is likely to get a prison sentence of more than 12 years, according to prosecutors who revealed after the verdicts that a reputed mob boss turned informant helped them make their case. ...

This was a plot on an episode of Law and Order a while back. Is it life imitating art, or the other way around.

( hope they throw all the books at this scum bag.

I've been following this case because I can't imagine the undeserved trauma these kids went through because of this greedy, corrupt prick. I hope he spends decades behind bars, and that the sting of a thousand civil lawsuits eats every last penny of his ill-gotten gains.

Seriously? We couldn't even make it past one post without getting partisan? How about greedy, asshole judge for starters? If you were to describe this guy, his politcal lean is far from the top of my concerns.

Corrupt judge. This is what happens when you privatize what should be public functions.

Good point...Guilty until proven innocent. If ONE was innocent it was an abhorration.

Just like the not-for-profit justice system, it happens sometimes.

Malfeasance is the worst crime possible, second only to outright treason. Anyone convicted of abusing the trust of the people deserves to be put to death in the most painful ways imaginable. A small fine and a few paltry years spent in a comfortable jail cell is far too good for anyone that abuses their authority and greases the slide from mischievous child to fully fledged criminal.
