CBS News' Lara Logan Assaulted During Egypt Protests

Freeeeeedom!! Woohoo!

:sigh:

Re: CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Tahrir Square

Muslim women whom, I'm sure, can appreciate what I said before about rape victims being turned into criminals.

Are those women not Muslims?

According to the article, soldiers, who are male, also helped.

Any questions?

Yes, what does this picture have to do with anything?

My guess is that he is saying that she is a really good-looking lady who went into an area of chaos and anarchy. It's a dangerous thing to do.

Re: CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Tahrir Square

As in "penetration" raped or ...? The articles I read keep saying sexually assaulted which I take to mean groped and inappropriately touched. Can you link an article ?

Generally sexual assault means forcible rape.

a statutory offense that provides that it is a crime to knowingly cause another person to engage in an unwanted sexual act by force or threat; "most states have replaced the common law definition of rape with statutes defining sexual assault"

What about the hundreds of thousands of other civilian males that were there? They didn't do jack ****.

That comes dangerously close to suggesting she asked for it.

Re: CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Tahrir Square

It sure does.

Whether it is a product of misogyny or the making of p.c. excuses because of the ethnicity/religion of the perps, any attempt to shift the blame from the assaulters and on to the victim is too much.

Re: CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Tahrir Square

Oh, well I disagree. Saying she asked for it puts a tint on it that she deserved it in some way. That couldn't be further from the truth. It's more about putting herself in a bad situation. If a reporter was groped during the LA riots would you have been surprised? When anarchy is the law, bad stuff happens to good people.

It kind of reminds me of the NFL when female reporters started to complain about inappropriate comments from players while they were interviewing them in the locker room. Really? You send extremely attractive women into a locker room full of naked men and then act surprised that something inappropriate was said? Did they deserve it? No. Should anyone have been surprised? No.

You cannot put yourself into a bad situation and then act surprised about it. It doesn't make it right, it just is what it is.

You're going to compare what happened to her with a few comments in a locker room? She wasn't just groped, she was brutally raped. She had security with her, they were just overwhelmed. I don't entirely disagree with you that people can put themselves in a bad situation, but, in this case, no, nobody had any reason to expect this. Where's your outrage? Suggesting that she or anyone should have just expected this would make Sharia law proponents proud.

You know, I did not know she was raped. Even still, I am not surprised. Call me a bit of a pessimist, but a pretty girl walking around an area that is under total anarchy getting raped does not surprise me. How could it? They did it in broad daylight.

Again, none of that makes what happened to her right. She was not "asking for it". It just is not surprising and I think that's what the other poster was saying when they showed her picture.

You're telling me that when you read about this for the first time, your first reaction was, "No way..."?

If you had told me 40 years ago that the Conservatives would be standing up for women's rights while those calling themselves liberal were doing nothing but making excuses for it, I would have thought you were crazy.

My, how times have changed.

Pat yourself on the back but you are arguing with yourself. No one is saying anything about her rights. Don't put words in my mouth.

You have been doing nothing but make excuses for a woman getting gang raped.

Back in my day , and actual liberal worth their salt would be rallying on her behalf and fighting against the misogyny that precipitated it instead of all of these blase' excuses you are offering.

Really? Show me where I made an excuse for her getting raped? Show me where I said it was ok? Before you go having an orgasm with yourself about liberals changing or some other Glenn Beck-like non sequitor nonsense, please, do yourself a favor and read.

All I said, again, was the I think the previous poster put up her picture to say, "Look how pretty she is and look where she was". There is no statement about morality there, approval, or even disapproval. They are just observations.

To be honest, I am surprised no journalists were murdered. When I heard about the sexual assault, I was not surprised. I am sorry if you were and if that offends you, but I was not surprised. Men can be... I am not sure I can think of the proper word to describe it. Lets just say men can go pretty low when given the opportunity.

Why don't we wait for him to speak for himself? Why choose that picture, do you think she was wearing that dress when she was doing the interview in the square?

Close. My first reaction was "un-****ing-believable". This wasn't supposedly a riot born of outrage like your LA comparison these were pro democracy "demonstrations". Supposedly there was security as well as the military there, so yeah, I was surprised this happened.

Why women's right? Women aren't the only one capable of being hurt in that situation. If that was a man being assaulted, you would not be outraged? An Egyptian journalist was killed.

Unless the conservatives support a woman's right to her body, your statement above just doesn't hold water.

Re: CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Tahrir Square

What happened to this woman is despicable. However it's not shocking or even remotely surprising. Mob mentality regardless of ideology tends to lead a few people to commit horrible acts. Christian Rwandan Hutus raped, maimed and murdered thousands of women. Marxists militias in South America have been known to rape countless native villages. US soldiers raped many Vietnamese women when they were fighting for 'their freedom'. Read the Bible and you'll find many examples of massacres being carried out even by supposedly peaceful servants of God. It's almost 'human' to take violence and cruelty to a certain level when one finds themselves in control. I don't expect some of the Egyptian protesters to be above this.

You want to know the truth, G? I just keep thinking what that must have been like for her (understanding that I can never really fully know). I also think a group of men victimizing a woman like that shows them to be nothing more than scum sucking cowards and, it frustrates me some that, even before we get to express concern for her or show outrage, the first consideration should be how this impacts the worlds view of the demonstrators. Y'know, anything said about the protesters that may or may not be fair, is nothing compared to what this lady suffered.

Don't you see, though, by making a comment like "look how pretty she is" you're suggesting that, "well men are just men and they can't be responsible for what they do because look at what a looker she is after all", - like this whole thing should just be overlooked and I just think that's bull**** myself.

Why women's right? Women aren't the only one capable of being hurt in that situation. If that was a man being assaulted, you would not be outraged?
I see sexual assault as being a worse thing to have to endure than a regular assault. I guess it's just the chauvinist side of me that tells me it's worse when a man assaults a woman than when he assaults another man.

Unless the conservatives support a woman's right to her body, your statement above just doesn't hold water.

More weak, bs, excuses.

Re: CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Tahrir Square

**** happens and we move on.

I'm sorry, but this nonchalant response made me see red. "**** happens?" If you had been beaten and gang raped for more than 30 minutes, injured so severely that you were still in the hospital nearly a week later, would you shrug it off as "**** happens??" If your mother or your sister or your wife had been the victim of a beating and gang rape, would you visit them in the hospital offering a shrug and, "**** happens??" Or are you under the mistaken impression that she was an American, and therefore "**** happens" to American female reporter? Well, she wasn't American and she wasn't an Israeli... she was South African. Is it still okay that "**** happens?"

That is the coldest, the most infuriating thing I've ever heard. I'm going to have to pour myself a drink to read the rest of this thread, and not get myself suspended.
