That's 3.5x the reported $20 Bil missing in the Madoff Scam.
And enough to give 7 Million people $10,000.
He could have made Cairo a party instead of a demo.
Not sharing the wealth; one of the oldest causes of revolution.

$70B stash: report

Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak is laughing all the way to the casbank.

The most hated man in Egypt, where anti-government protests raged for a 13th day yesterday, is likely the richest man in the world, a Bombshell report reveals.

The teetering tyrant’s family fortune is worth about $70 billion — stashed away in Swiss and other foreign bank accounts and shadowy real-estate holdings in Manhattan, London and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, the Guardian newspaper reports.

That puts the 82-year-old despot comfortably ahead of Mexican business magnate and New York Times sugar daddy Carlos Slim Helu, who’s worth about $53.5 billion, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the richest American with $53 billion, according to a list of the world’s richest men by Forbes.com.

And that golden nest egg has the Arab world seeing red.

“Mubarak! This is not your money. You must return back every penny to Egypt,” a poster named Hassan commented on the Web site of PressTV, a Mideast-based broadcast.

“Leaders in the Arab world are the richest men in the world, while their people are poor and oppressed. The only peace is knowing these people will face justice when they meet Allah,” added Nazir, another poster.

The whereabouts of Mubarak’s properties in New York are shrouded in secrecy....

First off.. it is the NY Post..

Second off .. it is a Rupert Murdoch owned newspaper...

Alone these two should shoot up huge red flags on accuracy and truthfulness.

But saying that, there is no doubt that Mubarak and his family has "earned" a bundle during his 30 years. Is it 70 billion.. maybe but I have my doubts on the accuracy. As for being the richest... Most "dictators" in the Gulf are way richer if you use the same method of counting. Hell the English Queen is most likely richer if you county her and her family holdings world wide.

Point is .. it is damn hard to quantify these peoples wealth so it is much easier to throw out a massive number and hope no one actually call you on it.. that is what the Post and most Murdoch news out lets LOVE to do.

I doubt 70 Bil as well. Though stealing only a 'mere' few Billion over 30 years and investing in real estate (or stocks) almost anywhere in the West would result in lotsa digits. Very possibly into double digit billions by now.

Of course, the NY Post is sourcing Guardian, the UK Leftist rag. Talk about low credibility.

This news story isn't just from one source, its from a number of sources. I saw it myself on Yahoo from US News, How Hosni Mubarak Got So Rich - Yahoo! Finance

Regardless, that scumbag should give whatever he took back to the people he should have been giving to, the people of Egypt.

No he isn't. Switzerland froze all his assets. :rofl

The OP was 4 days ago. The freezing today.

And it's dubious all his money is in Switzerland alone. Tho perhaps it and his other holdings can be better traced using those accounts.

the swiss didn't give a damn about it until his political power was lost. There should be no respect for them as well.

... so the Swiss should seize the assets of all dictators and people you dont like? How about the US does it first? You do know he has tons of US assets?

This story got it sort of wrong.

What the title should read is Hosni Mubarak may have been the richest man in the world.

It appears that the Swiss authorities may have changed that by freezing any and all Mubarak assets held in that Nation.

Mubarak has been a really bad guy but stupid he has not been, and if he were smart he would have at least some of of his ill gotten gains in a Bank in the Cayman Islands, which are famous for not only secrecy but hiding stolen money.

Read the Forbes article. Estimates of his wealth were grossly exaggerated and completely unsubstantiated.

He shouldn't have any of our money in the first place... We and others like the swiss seem to love him until he no longer can hold all control over "his people".

Eh? Not have any of "your money".. what are you smoking. He has invested millions in the US, in property and stock and they have not been seized yet. His family has also done so. How is that "your money"?
