US agrees to tell Russia Britain's nuclear secrets

I understand and to a point agree with those sentiments. However, please don't blame the entire United States. Americans regard the British as friends and worthy allies, even if we don't always see eye to eye. It is that dumbo currently residing in the White House... another reminder that never EVER should a graduate of Harvard Law School (as we are also learning in Taiwan) be permitted to become head of state/government ANYWHERE in the world EVER again!

The special relationship between US and UK lies within the people. This .... incident has not changed it nor will it. But I do not view US Government as a friend or ally of UK

Obama has been Anti British the moment his ass sat on in that Oval office.

What is done cannot be changed but we should learn from it. UK should start drawing back from US foreign policy including our troops and either cancel our entire Nuclear project --- what is the point of it? What stops Russia selling it on? Or restart again with absolutely no US hand in it at all.

I can't wait for 2012. I really can't. Because I just cannot wait to see what kind of incompetent lunatic the American people decide to follow President Obama with. I'll even make sure to bring a fiddle to the polling booth.

I don't blame America for working in it's own interests, I blame the UK government for being naive about what our relationship means at a political level.
 
/shrug a non story. Not the first time nor the last time the US pisses on its allies. Bush did it all the time, even in public as we all remember.

Per the article, the U.S. and Russia already share nuclear arsenal information. The Brits don't like sharing those numbers and have wanted to keep things hush hush. It seems Obama blew that for them.

I note that the UK's Ministry of Defence has yet to sign the contract for the renewal of the Trident missile system. The revelation that the 'ally' whose industry manufactures the weapons feel justified in breaking its confidentiality agreements surely gives the UK government the perfect excuse to cancel the contract and save itself $54 billion into the bargain. Might that damage the business plans of Lockheed?

Or perhaps... the whole "We'll tell you the serial #'s" was a red herring, as the U.S. knew the U.K. wouldn't renew but just used it as a bargaining chip with the Russians to get what we wanted? That would be pretty shrewd.

It's a theory. Thing is, I suspect that the GB government WILL renew Trident. The strength of the military lobby in the Conservative Party is very strong indeed, and the Special Relationship has always been more important to this lobby than Britain's military independence. I think Obama's 'betrayal' gives strength to the lobby arguing that the UK should think more in terms of strengthening its conventional capabilities and less about maintaining an 'independent' nuclear capability that clearly is no such thing.

This whole thing does feed into a growing conviction amongst ordinary people that the Special Relationship really only works in one direction.

Actually, that wouldn't be too surprising. I had a hard time believing that Britain wasn't in on this. This makes a lot of sense.

I guess we'll see if Britain renews it or not.
 
This past week, people from both sides of the aisle can begin questioning this man's fitness to serve as leader.

Giving away secrets after our allies say no is a level of arrogance and danger that is incredulous.
It begs the question, what else has he done?

Because the Russians are still totally smarting over the terrible defeat they suffered at the hands of the Americans in the Cold War, and are just biding their time waiting for revenge...

Oh wait. No, the Russians don't see it like that. The Russians think the Americans lost the Cold War even worse than they did, and they now consider the States a declining world power, past its prime. Russia will be perfectly content, and in fact IS perfectly content, to just watch America fall from greatness in the inevitable slow slide of history. Russia has no need to give that slide a push.

So stop treating them like they're enemies, and start treating them like the partners to you that they are.

Furthermore, current events indicate that the least politically stable countries with nuclear weapons are Pakistan, North Korea, and Iran. Russia is not part of that list.

Russia has nuclear weapons. What is stable today, in 5 years may not be. We don't know. Prudence demands vigilance. In 1985, had you said the Berlin Wall would come tumbling down, and the USSR would soon dissolve, you'd be laughed at.

We cannot predict the future. But we can look at the past, and act accordingly.

Further more, if Russia has no ill intent, why demand this information? I don't imply they are planning a war, but they ARE serious enough about being prepared to demand this information. Only a fool would give it up, and one must question the wisdom of those defending Obama's actions now.

The Brits naturally do not want any information given to another country without their permission and the Russians obviously are more than happy to get any new information on a country. It does not mean this information is really that significant.

I wouldn't see anything wrong with us giving China serial numbers either, especially if it was part of some quid pro-quo where we get something more substantial accomplished. Such information does not give Russia any real strategic edge they do not already have. Knowing what serial number a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile has is not going to make it any easier to shoot down nor is it going to make the subs carrying the missile any easier to sink.

Like hell the U.K. paid $50 billion for the Trident missiles. They're not that expensive. Never mind that we helped them pay for the damn things. You should understand that U.S. arms sales are essentially charitable contributions without all the ethical considerations.

I don't know the original price, but the Trident renewal that is currently awaiting signatures is for $54 billion. Go check. I have.
