CNN anchor Anderson Cooper on Egypt attack: ‘It was pandemonium’

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper was attacked in Egypt by a mob of people supporting President Hosni Mubarak, he said at the site of protests in Cairo.

The CNN production crew were with Cooper in the midst of clashes between pro- and anti-Mubarak supporters, when they were approached by a group who favoured Mubarak’s side.

“They at first started going for the cameras: they didn’t want any pictures taken, we weren’t really taking pictures with the big camera…We immediately started to turn around,” he says in a video on CNN’s website. “The crowd kept throwing more punches and kicks, trying to grab us, it was pandemonium. There was really no control to it. A young man would just come up, look at you, and then punch you in the face.”

Somebody just e-mailed this to me. I hope he's alright. He probably is but SHAME on those Egyptians for trying to ruin that man's perfect face.

I imagine it can be very risky at times trying to cover a story.

I was watching coverage the other day with my wife and told her these people are nuts to put themselves in the middle of that powder keg.

A reminder that journalists provide a valuable service and can sometimes face great personal risk in the course of their duties.

Anyone who looks as Anderson does and goes out in the streets where the US is part of the perceived problem is off his rocker.

I covered the Murders Harrah's in Laughlin NV. a few years ago and tried to interview some Hells Angels in their hotel and they ran my ass off and I left cheerfully.

Digression is the better part of valor. Being stupid is not taught in Journalism classes.

By the way Anderson is just fine, I saw him on TV a few hours after the incident.

Here is a link from the LA Times. Looks like Cooper was smacked in the head at least 10 times, but still maintained his cool, and helped usher his crew to safety through it all. Cooper is not only a decent journalist, but has brass balls too. I can hear 'em clanging all the way from Texas. LOL.

I saw film of this incident on CNN. Cooper's camera guy managed to get the thing turned on. The attack was brutal, and I'm not kidding. These thugs wanted to see blood... and maybe even more, since Cooper later said the men were trying to rip the clothes off of his female producer.

I just heard on the news that all reporters in Egypt were targeted in attacks around 2pm by the pro-Mubarak thugs. Someone planned this.

The old protections of journalists and journOlists are just that. Old. Though they would get shot or harmed before 911 was accidental, and accepted when it happened. It all seemed to change after Daniel Pearl had his head severed from his body.

Just more civility brought to you by the Middle Eastern world.

Though I find Cooper a wanker, journOlists and journalists shouldn't have to become pinatas for reporting or propagandizing to the world.

I like CNN quite a bit. After Fox Sunday cartoons, History channel, and Adult Swim it is what I watch most. I think he is a stand up guy but JESUS CHRIST they use him way to much. But he also is hardcore at this.
"We’re going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share. In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying ten percent of his salary, and that’s crazy." -Reagan
