Giant cyclone hits Australian tourist coast

(Reuters) - One of the most powerful cyclones on record slammed into Australia's coast on Thursday, uprooting trees, tearing roofs off buildings and raising the danger of deadly storm surges.

Cyclone Yasi, packing winds of up to 300 km (186 miles) an hour near its core, come ashore along hundreds of kilometers of northeast coastline late on Wednesday.
This is beyond anything that we have ever experienced in the United States. Sustained winds of 186 MPH beats even Cecile, which hit Mississippi in 1968.

Say a prayer for Australia. They are going to need it.

    HOLY ****.

That's the equivalent of an F-3 tornado. A tornado the size of a large city. (and that's just the worst part of the core!)

It was bigger than Katrina, both in size and in speeds. So far only 1 death and 2 people missing, but massive damage. They got out most of the low lying areas.

Apparently, the Australians are much smarter than the idiots of Katrina. They got out.

Well that depends. What do you want to be tied to?

Well kinda, there're building all over north Queensland designed to withstand hurricanes that double as emergency shelters, so those that can't get out have somewhere to hide. Queenslanders are just better prepared.
