Unemployment claims rise; durable orders drop
Updated 1d 8h ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose sharply last week, but the figures were largely distorted by rare snowstorms that swept through the Southeast.
A second report Thursday said factories saw a disappointing drop in demand for their products in December, reflecting weakness for commercial and military aircraft.
The Commerce Department said orders for long-lasting durable goods dropped 2.5% last month after an even larger 3.1% decline in November. The weakness in both months reflected big declines in demand for aircraft.
Excluding the transportation sector, orders rose 0.5% in December following a 4.5% jump in orders outside of transportation in November.
In the unemployment report, the Labor Department said new applications for benefits surged last week by a seasonally adjusted 51,000 to 454,000, highest level since late October.

I for one can only hope Congressional Democrats join the Republican in using proven methods in getting this economy moving again. My county is at 14.2% unemployment and California overall is at 12.3%, but take a minute and look at some of the other counties...........
