Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spending

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

And this single statement shows why we should never...ever...ever put conservatives in office again.

well...

it appears the prez has become quite the quasi conservative himself

Left laments Barack Obama's move to center - Meredith Shiner and Maggie Haberman - POLITICO.com

and it's not just that wannabe "reaganite" sotu

Obama Calls Tax Cuts the 'Right Thing to Do'

sheldon whitehouse of RI insists the prez must draw distinct lines between himself and those reprobate neanderthals and knuckle draggers

hey, he stood loud and proud for his provisions protecting pre existers (a point on which my side will cheerfully give him everything he wants)

and he, of course, called out those wingnut "wealthiest 2%"

unfortunately, he's already caved there, already signed em into law

party on, progressives

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

For those who like Obama's spending freeze idea, at least more than his previous spending run, please SUPPORT IT.

So let me get this straight .. because I'm just a little bit confused her, are you saying we should be praising the spending freeze ?? The last budget was well over a trillion dollars in the red .. So you are suggesting .. that a 5 year freeze at a deficit of over 1 trillion dollars per year .. is something we should support ??

Welll fellow Americans ... it's time to Rejoice our 2016 National debt is only going to be roughly 19 trillion dollars ..

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

The 2006 deficit .. 3.10 billion dollars ..
The 2011 deficit … 1.48 Trillion dollars
total debt end of 2006 8.5 trillion
total debt end of 2010 13.t trillion plus the 2011 shortfall
January of 2007 is when liberals started writing, voting and passion the budgets.

Considering everything, I'll take even so called conservatives over liberals … thank you very much .

Not if, as you alluded, once the budget is back in order, appropriate spending does not resume.

more on the morose:

ap's fact check finds his "ledger out of balance"

FACT CHECK: Obama and his imbalanced ledger - Yahoo! Finance

"more spending [investment, not stimulus] on the one hand and a spending freeze on the other"

"but obama offered far more examples of where he would spend than where he would cut, and some of the areas he identified for savings are not certain to yield much if anything"

do you deny it?

today he promises, "health insurance reform will slow these rising costs"

SLOW these rising costs?

that's a NEW pitch

a concession to raunchy reality

for 2 years, ahab obama justified his radical reform of 1/6 of our business on ECONOMIC grounds---he was gonna "reverse the cost trajectory"

it was only in the days before his near resort to DEEM that he transmogrified his emphasis to the SOCIAL impulses, ie, expanded coverage

and now, instead of REVERSING curves, he says he's SLOWED them

sadly, according to ap, medicare's actuary, who's always been a "thorn in obama's side," today testified before house budget that he "doubts" obamacare will, indeed, keep costs down

The Associated Press: Medicare official doubts health care law savings

furthermore, mr foster unfolded how millions of americans will NOT be able to keep their plans if they want to, probably ahab obama's most oft hurled harpoon

and then there's the earmark ban

obama BRAVELY (LOL!) threatens his presidential VETO should any bill with a porker proceed to his office

but, finds fact check, boehner has already declared none will

and the factfinders then go on to quote the president in 2009: "done right, earmarks have given legislators the opportunity to direct federal money to worthy projects that benefit people in their districts, and that's why i've opposed their outright elimination"

furthermore, hassled harry yesterday "blasted" his obsequious boss on the question

Harry Reid blasts Obama on earmarks - Shira Toeplitz - POLITICO.com

obama bellied up for MALPRACTICE reform

a gimpy gambit, finds fact check, we've been here before

he's lucy holding charlie brown's football (ap's metaphor, not mine)

and, come to think of it, where was the critical question of DRILLING in obama's sadsack sotu?

his resort to that doa debt commission---a washington gimmick, ap suggests

social security---the phony freezer pledges to protect current retirees, strengthen the system for future generations, with no mention of retirement age, nor means testing

how ya gonna strengthen it, then, sam?

once more, this destitute sotu is far more significant for what it DIDN'T say

but, hey, aren't you PROUD of his RACE TO THE TOP!

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

Oh man, is Neil Cavuto right about this?:(

Cavuto: 4 Billion Reasons to Cut the Debt - FoxNews.com

That's why I’m such a pain in the butt every day,
Four billion dollars.
A day.
That’s' why I keep bugging newly in charge Republicans every day.
Four billion dollars a day.
That's why I keep tracking them on their promises to cut spending.
That's why I keep bugging them.
And needling them.
And pushing them.
Four billion dollars a day.
That's why I rant, and I’m usually not a ranter.
That's why I whine, and I’m usually not a whiner.
And that's why I’m so damn impatient, and I’m usually quite patient.
I have lost my patience. With politicians who are either slow to act or just slow.
Just bad. Very bad. So forgive my behaving badly. But pardon my French, but there is no nice way for me to say, "Guys, get off your asses here! We are dying here!"
And why I say to those who say, "Give them time," that we are out of time. And we are out of money.
To the tune of four billion dollars a day.
That is how much we pay in just interest payments on our more than fourteen trillion dollar debt.
Every day.
Each day.
Day in.
Day out.
Four billion dollars a day in finance charges, on our big ole national Visa bill.
That's more than 28 billion dollars per week.
112 billion bucks per month.
Debt interest per year
More than 1.4 trillion smackers per year.
Even if we never spend another dime, that much more in the hole.
Digging in, just standing still.
That's why I’m such a pain, and a nudge. Yea, that’s why I'm a jerk, and constant critic.
Because of that constant reality.
Four billion dollars a day.
So the next time someone tells you, "That Cavuto guy should give Republicans time. They just got in."
Tell them to figure this out.
More than eighty billion bucks in the hole just since they "just got in."
Let that sink in.

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

obama:

To put us on solid ground, we should also find a bipartisan solution to strengthen Social Security for future generations. We must do it without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable, or people with disabilities; without slashing benefits for future generations; and without subjecting Americans’ guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market.

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

i thought this president was gonna pull us out of two wars, you'd think that would make for easy defense cuts. instead we're gonna cut benefits to the poorest americans?

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

time mag, today:

In May 2010, Barack Obama invited a small group of presidential historians to the White House for a working supper in the Family Dining Room. It was the second time he'd had the group in since taking office, and as he sat down across the table from his wife Michelle, the President pressed his guests for lessons from his predecessors. But as the conversation progressed, it became clear to several in the room that Obama seemed less interested in talking about Lincoln's team of rivals or Kennedy's Camelot than the accomplishments of an amiable conservative named Ronald Reagan, who had sparked a revolution three decades earlier when he arrived in the Oval Office. Obama and Reagan share a number of gifts but virtually no priorities. And yet Obama was clearly impressed by the way Reagan had transformed Americans' attitude about government. The 44th President regarded the 40th, said one participant, as a vital "point of reference." Douglas Brinkley, who edited Reagan's diaries and attended the May dinner, left with a clear impression that Obama had found a role model. "There are policies, and there is persona, and a lot can be told by persona," he says. "Obama is approaching the job in a Reaganesque fashion."

When Obama stood before Congress, the Cabinet and the American people to deliver his second State of the Union address, both the Reagan persona and policies put in appearances. He proposed a freeze in discretionary spending and federal salaries, a push to simplify the tax code and billions in cuts to the defense budget, and he made new calls for a bipartisan effort to repair Social Security. Each of these had been proposed before by another third-year President coming off a midterm defeat in a period of high unemployment. "Let us, in these next two years — men and women of both parties, every political shade — concentrate on the long-range, bipartisan responsibilities of government," Reagan said in his 1983 State of the Union, "not the short-range or short-term temptations of partisan politics."

At a glance, it's hard to imagine a President who had less in common with Reagan than the Ivy League lawyer from Hawaii who seeks larger federal investments, a bigger social safety net and new regulations for Wall Street and Big Oil. But under the surface, there is no mistaking Obama's increasing reliance on his predecessor's career as a helpful template for his own. Since the November elections, Obama has brought corporate executives into the White House, reached out to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and made compromise his new watchword. He signed a surprise $858 billion tax cut that would have made Reagan weep with joy and huddled with Reagan's former White House chief of staff Ken Duberstein for lessons learned when the Gipper governed amid economic troubles. Over the Christmas break, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs tweeted that Obama was reading a Reagan biography, and just to confirm the bond, Obama recently wrote an homage to Reagan for USA Today. "Reagan recognized the American people's hunger for accountability and change," Obama wrote, conferring on Reagan two of his most cherished political slogans.

the problem is our contemporary prez, unlike the gip, is all phony

and how do you reaganites and anti-reaganites feel about THAT?

seeya at the polls, pals

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

Freezes will do nothing until we cut spending. Simple math, can't give tax cuts and increase spending.

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

Not if, as you alluded, once the budget is back in order, appropriate spending does not resume.

I guess, it's all in what one considers appropriate spending.

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

he called for a freeze in last year's sotu, nothing came of it

as well as his debt commission, a tax on banks and using recovered 30B oftarp money to lend to small biz, while simultaneous ELIMINATING cap gains on small biz investment...

State Of The Union 2010 (FULL TEXT): Read Obama's Speech

he's incoherent and clueless

sorry

Ok, that I can agree with.

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

it was weird

when i watched obama's sotu, taking notes, as always, my observation that the top domestic priority the president pushed was RACE TO THE TOP

others he grabbed credit for, in that customary sotu way, included start and his reform of student loans (which was passed as part of his obamacare and which he emphasized in this destitute sotu ABOVE that great white whale he hounded and harpooned like an ahab)

i noted that his second most called out political breakthrough that lugubrious twilight was his CREDIT CARD reform

which makes the juxtaposition of cnn's report two days subsequent all the more jarring:

Credit card interest rates hover near record highs of 15% - Jan. 28, 2011

remember, his 2010 sotu asserted as well this phony freeze

it also guaranteed a bank tax, an elimination of cap gains on small biz, and his doa debt commission, the embodiment of presidential buck passing

are you sure this guy knows what he's doing?

still not embarrassed?

party on

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

well...

we saw TIME MAG's sardonic assessment a few posts up---barack hussein, the wannabe reagan

here's ap TODAY:

There's a new slogan in town, and it's a winner. At least that's what President Barack Obama has in mind. The president unveiled his "Winning the Future" mantra in his State of the Union address, and now the upbeat but amorphous phrase is part of every speech, policy and pronouncement coming out of the administration.

What's next on health care? Where to go on energy and education policy? How to improve the jobs picture? It's all about winning the future through innovation and determination, Obama and his aides have argued over the past few days.

"We've got to up our game," Obama told a crowd in Wisconsin. The nation must ensure "America is still on top" in a decade, the president said on YouTube. The country can't just lead, adds Vice President Joe Biden; it needs to "dominate."

It's a juiced-up way for Obama to frame his initiatives after two years in which even some of the president's supporters acknowledge that can-do verve sometimes was lacking from the conversation. What it means, though, is still TBD — to be determined.

It seems that just in time for the 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's birth, Morning in America has arrived once again.

does ap sound a bit cynical to you?

LOL!

there's just no there there

all rah rah, no raison

IN TIMES LIKE THESE!

and all the reagan stuff...

let me ask you, exactly how do you ANTI reaganites feel about this?

i can tell you in full what devotees of dear ronnie think about it

phonier than the freeze

are you sure this guy knows what he's doing?

Re: Obama Will Use SOTU to Call for 5 yr Freeze on Non-Security Discretionary Spendin

the lady's look:

Gone was the president who told the nation in his inaugural speech that it was “time to set aside childish things,” and who spent much of his first two years bemoaning the mess his predecessor had left. In his place was an upbeat and forward-looking Mr. Obama, serving up rosy economic news (“The stock market has come roaring back”) and lauding America’s greatness and can-do spirit. (“We do big things.”)

It was perhaps no accident that Mr. Obama took Lou Cannon’s biography of that other optimist and purveyor of American exceptionalism, Ronald Reagan, with him to Hawaii over Christmas. Or that one of the Washington wise men the president consulted recently was Kenneth M. Duberstein, a chief of staff to President Reagan.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/30/weekinreview/30stolberg.html

is the lady implying the prez is churlish?

we already saw time mag's take: modeling reagan

and ap's: the can-do prez, details tbd

elite analysis appears to have reached consensus---obama's agenda for 2011 as laid out in his sotu is essentially a bunch of empty happy talk

the rest of nyt's perspective goes on for 2 pages pointing out the risk any optimist may take when times are bad

ie, not real interesting, mere 2 + 2

the point---the elites aint swallowing the gipper gambit

aren't YOU about to gag from all this ronald reagan redux?

i know reaganites sure are

take care, stay up

pray for ms giffords and her family, pray for the others violated

remember our troops

work hard, look out for your kids

america will survive barack obama
