Obama to Push for New Spending as GOP Demands Deep Budget Cuts

The amount of hate directed at the American labor movement is staggering to observe here. It is as if all of you were completely uneducated about the history of labor in this nation.

The history of labor movements in this country has little to do with the corruption seen from them today.

Not only that, their membership continues to decline

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is out with its annual report on union membership. It’s down, once again: 11.9% of employees in 2010 were union members, down from 12.3% in 2009. There were 14.7 million union members, significantly down from 1983, the first year for which comparable data is available, when there were 17.7 million. Note that the population of the United States in 1983 was 234 million as compared to 308 million in 2010.

And you can provide ample evidence of this alleged "corruption" of the American labor movement?

No but the unions now abuse their power are more concerned with politics and getting democrats elected then they are their members

There is a reason union membership continues to drop and there is a reason that union goods are more expensive than goods from non union shops and nations that have non union businesses. Labor unions have priced the manufacturing business right out of the global economy and markets. those that complain about lost business ignore their own behavior in shopping price when making purchases especially big purchases i.e. autos.

I really hate to rain on your parade with a thunderstorm of facts but todays paper reported an $8 billion dollar profit for FORD and their unionized labor force.

You mean the Ford that didn't get taken over by the Govt? didn't Ford renegotiate with the unions to get more favorable contracts?

The unions have been a partner with Ford for many decades now. They negotiate contracts to the mutual benefit of both.

How about it, Haymarket, like that Ford article. some good stuff there including

Meanwhile, Ford, under Mulally, drove bargains with employees to reduce hourly compensation to about $50 an hour from $75 previously, reformed its executive culture, changed its research and development strategy, and came up with a financial plan to keep the company solvent without accepting a dime of taxpayer money.

Imagine that!

Spoken like a good little liberal. tax increases are always the answer to liberals, never is it about how the tax dollars are spent. We have over 16 million Americans unemployed and raising taxes won't put those people back to work.
a little bit of selective editing on your part conservative...he agrees with me that nothing can be a 'sacred cow' and that everything on the budget must face the axe, he then states that tax increases will have to be part of the solution, which, if we want to get things straightened out, they will have to be....cuts and tax increases together. tough medicine i know, but no other way around it.

Do you always stereotype? Everything has to be on the table but as usual you ignored the biggest expense categories which are entitlements. Raising taxes will not put 16 million people back to work and will not generate enough revenue to pay off the debt. Most liberals don't understand that if you grow the economy which tax cuts will do, you increase employment and govt. revenue which with spending cuts will lower the deficit and pay down the debt

Bit rich coming from you?

Isn't it interesting that "liberals/progressives" support personal choice except when it comes to personal responsibility and then that responsibility always rests with someone else paying for it?

Didn't know that anyone could really change history but liberals sure try to do that. Whose version of history? Are there more than one?

What is really interesting is that Obama supporters who have alzheimer's today and forget the promises and lies Obama has made somehow want to relive the Reagan years! Diversion is what liberals always do. California residents especially seem to easily forget the mess their state is in. Can't wait until they go to the Congress for a bailout.

Oh yeah, and here's you accusing the left of being radical and socialists.......

Most of the left is neither radical not socialist.

Do you know most on the left? Actions speak louder than words.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then let the states solve their own problems, you see a problem that apparently millions of others don't. Making it national doesn't solve your perceived problems. I love how liberals always claim to care about what others pay when the reality is, it is about power and your own personal gain. You have too much passion for this issue not to have something else involved here.

Life is about making tough choices and that seems to be a problem with liberals

Jeez, talk about your stereotyping...

Wow, glad to see I have such an affect on you, thanks for keeping my posts and hopefully you are learning from them as I stand by each of them. Do you need someone to explain them to you?

The memo went out. Now we're not talking about "spending," we're talking about "investing." Are we really the sheeple they think we are? I sure hope not.

Republican leaders signaled Sunday that they won't go for President Obama's expected call for more federal spending in infrastructure, education and innovation initiatives in his State of the Union address.

Cantor questioned reports that Obama will seek new “investments” in his State of the Union address, saying the public had had enough of government spending to boost the economy.

Read #1 infrastructure=unions, #2 education=unions and #3 innovation initiatives=so-called green technology. No need to watch.

How about a State of the Union that brings us up to date on who's being held accountable for the evaporation of 25% of homeowners' wealth? (Oh, wait. That'd be Congress and their cronies.) What's being done to fix the housing market? What's being done to address the debacle that is our 50 states teetering on bankruptcy? Who at the SEC lost their jobs for the Maddof mess? What's being done to stop the drain of taxpayer dollars and jobs by illegal immigrants? How about telling the American people that our government is holding people's feet to the fire? Nah.

Only that a person who is one hell of a stereotyper, accusing someone else of being a stereotyper is pretty funny.

So thanks for the entertainment. I already had that set up in a thread elsewhere I guess you didn't see.

I mean, nobody here really needs evidence you're completely partisan and have no desire for any kind of real debate.

I still don't get it though, if you're always so right, why bother with all of us incompetant, foreign in my case and by that clearly mentally deficient :roll:not as successful IRL, blood sucking socialists?

To you real debate means telling everyone else what you feel and ignoring the facts that refute it. I have given you and everyone else the opportunity to prove me wrong and yet no one has done that using the actual data. Op Ed pieces and economist's opinions do not trump bea, bls. and Treasury data. Seems to me you have no interest in holding anyone accountable for results but instead continue to buy rhetoric.

Debate to me means supporting your opinion with facts and refuting someone else's opinions with those facts. You have yet to do that on any issue. BEA.gov, BLS.gov, and the U.S. Treasury provides actual verifiable data. Suggest you and others become familiar with the sites.

with you there is no debate, with you, we either agree with you and your view of things, or we are 'obviously' liberals, obviously wrong, obviously have never lived in the 'real world'(at least never lived in your version of the 'real world'), obviously never have ran a business like you(although some of us have our doubts, but that is for another time), obviously never had a 'civics' class in school, 'obviously' don't understand the economy, don't understand taxes, apparently we just don't understand. isnt this your view of anyone who disagrees with you on anything? i believe it is. you are not God my friend, (and if you were, why in the hell are you posting on a debate board, don't you have better things to do?), you can be wrong, (often are) and there are those who oppose you politically, who are just as smart, and who have done as well in real life as you claim to have done. you would do well to remember that.

Exactly I am only wrong when proven wrong. I have given you the actual numbers not projections, not opinions, not propaganda, but actual numbers. I am waiting for you and anyone else to prove me wrong. In the absence of you doing that, I am indeed right.

you are a legend in your own mind.

yup and "investment for the future" = so this way i can't be held to a standard, like that stupid "unemployment won't go above 8%" boast.

first they said that we needed increases in spending to fix the present. then that didn't work and now they're going to say we need increased spending to help the future.... at what point, i wonder, will they claim that government spending has the ability to alter the past?

you are a legend in your own mind.

Thank you and it is non partisan facts that make me that legend and cause liberals to run away. No one can refute verifiable facts thus Obama supporters run

randel, just a bit of advice, you would get more credibility in this forum if you actually addressed the data presented vs. those little sly remarks that totally ignore content.
