Sheriff Clarence Dupnik of Pima County, where the shooting happened, told reporters the suspect had a troubled past. "All I can tell you is that this person may have a mental issue," Dupnik said.
Dupnik said there had been earlier contact between Loughner and law enforcement after he had made death threats, although they had not been against Giffords. He said the authorities believe he may not have been working alone.
Who did he make death threats to and why haven't they come forward, yet. Sounds like the sheriff was just repeating something he was told.

Of course the shooter is to blame.
So what motivated him is not important?

I am really getting tired of rehashing the same things over and over. I am going to wait until there are further developments and more information is released before I make any more comments about the case.

    Depends...WHAT actually motivated him?

All we know is he has been having problems with alcohol and drugs for the last 4 years, that he has been ranting because he met with the target of his shooting and was outraged she didnt answer his questions, he is a video gamer and in general, an asshole. If you want to connect or assign blame using any of those givens as his motivation...well...OK then. But there is ZERO indicator he was motivated by or even listened to or watched Beck, Palin, or anyone else for that matter.

Law enforcement officers talk to the media all the time. Much of what they say is just their opinion about a case or suspect.
How could the sheriffs comments be used in JL's defense? It is totally irrelevant and has nothing to do with the crime. You are really reaching.
I don't recall any of them speculating on how someone's political speech is the direct cause of the crime.

No, but she lied in a way that might result in a certain class of people being blamed for something that never happened. Tomato Tomahto?

Ugh... Haymarket... the people have the right to recall Sher'f Dumb****. It's in the laws of the state, and it is used to remove idiots when they identify themselves and piss off the electorate.
Recall is a process that I completely support... no problem there. The reality is that Sheriff Dupnik angered the far right by daring to bring up the subject of a possible impact on the political environment by the vitriol they engage in. That makes him public enemy Number One in their eyes. Sure the people have a right to do this. But their motives stink and have nothing to do with his job performance. he is being persecuted because of his own exercise of free speech.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

He isnt being 'persecuted.' He is being held accountable. World of difference. He used the lives of innocent men women and children to launch a politically motivated attack on people that had no connection whatsoever to the shootings. He is being held accountable because he is a partisan hack that plays to other mindless partisan hacks (effectively, obviously) and used his office in the wake of a shooting.

the far right, just like the far left, are in the minority in most places, tho they don't like to admit it....they have the power to make a lot of noise, and that is about it...
