They would need to land one million soldiers on Taiwan to subdue it. I don't think they can land that many through parachute drops into a VERY hostile environment...

They won't be able to do that at that level of force. What I have said to them in the past is even if you succeed what are you going to do with twenty million hostile people. They don't have an answer for that.

    Shoot them and starve them

Of course China would much rather not invade Taiwan in the first place. The forces China has lined up against Taiwan are there in case Taiwan declares formal independance at which point they would be used. China's perferred method of course will be economic and cultural domination of Taiwan leading to eventual unification

That makes sense. What do you think will be the interntional reaction to Chinese subjugation of the Taiwanese people? How do you think America will react?

Internationally China would face condemnation and drastically reduced trade with Europe and the US. China is increasing trade with south america, africa and other parts of asia, who would not likely be willing to join in such embargos

The US will at that time determine if they could beat China in a limited war in the region, one that China would be willing to risk nearly everything, but the US most likely will not. If the US feels it would win it would strike back, if not place embargos on China. Something China is working on to limit the effects of by increasing trade routes through asia using rain and road networks. The increased number of pipelines being built by China throughout asia is also part of that strategy.

China's entire strategy is to be able to control itself and the area around it, I strongly doubt China is seeking world domination.

obama has turned our once great country into a whipping post

he got squat from hu at the white house, even after all the lobster, the 400 dollar wine, and babs...

china is ruthless, china is determined, china like a tiger pulverizes doves with an absent minded swat

currency, taiwan, tibet, korea, human rights, climate, sanctions vs iran...

hu holds all the cards and wipes his feet on obama's pinstripes

hu blames his refusal to answer human rights on a mistranslation

Very good analysis. But I don't even think New America will have the ability to impose embargoes on the Chinese. New America will still need Chinese money to fund its entitlements. Besides, New America will have an increasing number of Fifth Columnists like myself.

Old America would have used China's weaknesses against it. Old America would have understood that if China fails to maintain the current rate of growth there will be unimaginable internal turmoil. Old America would have declared the entire coast of China a war zone, and sent commercial shipping insurance rates through the roof on goods coming into and out of China. But Old America is gone.

From every cultural study that I have read on the Chinese peoples and government, it appears that these sentiments are true. Thoughts....
China's one child policy virtually assures that China won't be entering any wars by choice because that one child's responsibilities are to succeed in life and take care of their parents not to go off and die in some optional conflict.

The imbalance between the sexes in China means that the country has at least twenty million excess young men who are sexually frustrated.

You beat me to this point. It is a reality that the one-child policy has caused a great gender imbalance due to the preference of Chinese for male children. As Albert points out, this leaves millions of men who need an outlet. For many, this is the PLA. Also, for many men, especially in rural areas, the PLA is the best way to get out of poverty (much as the poor used the Army and other services to get a start on getting a jump up from their own socioeconomic standing).
