Arizona legislature passes bill limiting funeral protests

As long as the protesters are not trespassing on private property, blocking entrances to parking lots or building entrance then there should be no buffer zone.

This is simple truth. I also think it should be extended to our political conventions too. And no pre-arresting! I forget if that was the RNC or the DNC convention, but they basically pre-arrested people they thought could cause trouble.

Yeah its ****ed up that assholes want to protest at this little girl's funeral but the government state or federal should not be passing unconstitutional laws.

Why would someone want to protest at a funeral anyway? Aren't some things sacred and dont't have to be protected by the constitution?

Oh wait. I see. Your avatar tells it all.

I think I'm missing a bit of cultural knowledge here, being English. I've heard of this church, and their picketing of AIDS victims and soldiers funerals, but, what's the connexion to the little girl?

They said they have a problem with her because she's Catholic.

Amen.

With the passage of this bill approved by 29-0 in the state Senate and 58-0 in the state House I really find it hard someone wants to bring out the old partisan crap.

This has nothing to do with lib vs right winger.

It is a frickin funeral. It isn't a county fair. They can go park their arses 300 feet away and call the little girl a slut as much as they want to.

Why only 300 feet? I can hear someone shouting at 300 feet and if they are not blocked I can see them quite easily.

I don't think it is just this - though at first glance, a 300 meter separation seems to answer that. It is an infringement which can be used another time in another space as a precedent and limitation will have been set.

There were other ways to solve this problem - including public campaigns to block the funeral viewer's view of the Phelps clan or allowing counter protest. The action has been taken with the right spirit (making sure a funeral is held in peace) but is the wrong tool to acheive this.

300 ft., not 300 meters. We never adopted the metric system over here remember?

A counter protest would just make an even worse spectacle out of the funeral. Would it be too much to ask for the girl to have a funeral in peace without a bunch screaming of idiots?

BTW I know violence is bad but I'd pay good money to see a close up of a sniper shot that took out Phelp's head in an explosion of brain, bone, and blood! And then watch another one piss his or her pants.

Personally I think the law is unconstitutional and a bad idea. I don't like the idea of being restricted like they chose to do.

On the other hand, I've always thought the Phelps clan's tactics clearly are a form of incitement and they should be held accountable for that. Any reasonable person would conclude they are deliberately stirring up anger in an attempt to cause violence. It's literally how the Phelps' make a living, getting people pissed off enough to throw a punch and then suing them.

edit: ****, I'm a liberal, that means I have to be against free speech. I forgot. You know, because liberals are always bad and conservatives are always good.

Careful now, they are going to call you a lib.

Wouldn't be the first time...or more than likely the last. I've been called them all. I normally just ignore it when someone calls me a name that they think is "dirty" in some way.

I'm sure they have their reasons, just like those who think it's a good idea to piss on a christian cross.

You mean like free speech? That's as sacred a thing as they come. At least to some people.

Greed is the most simple answer. They basically piss people off,get those people to violate their rights, sue and collect lawyer fees and what ever they can get their money grubbing greedy ambulance chasing fingers on. They probably figured that this was easier than representing dumbasses who spilled coffee on themselves, lard asses who shoved on too many cheeseburgers down their throats and other dumbasses who injured and or harmed themselves due to their own negligence.

Why couldn't the shooter kill the church people instead? That would be a lot better, hell, I'd even send him a Facebook friend request.

You DO know that the metric system has equal legal standing with the English system in the U.S., right?

I wish you were kidding, but that wouldn't surprise me. Some of the Fundie Christians claim that God loves everyone and then shows bigotry toward the largest and oldest Church in the Christian world...

I think that in order to have a crazy lunatic stalker that will kill you, you have to be interesting. Phelps and his family are just greedy money grubbing con artists abusing the system.

Arizona lawmakers take up funeral protest legislation - CNN.com

Once again Arizona shows it's legislators will do what is necessary vs. waiting on our federal legislators that are worthless as a tit on a boar hog. God help those that try and strike this down.

I could not agree more. I was born and raised in California more than a few years back when it was a great state and not overrun with the far left Liberals that have wrecked it.

I lived in Arizona for most of the last 20 years and found myself feeling the pride I once felt as a Californian. I was able to meet and get to know many Local, County, State, and Federal elected office holders and I was inspired to get into politics myself by what I saw in some that admired, and because of what I knew about some others who were less impressive.

I value my time in that State and am proud to have been a part of it. I expect they will continue to show the way as California continues to slide down hill in every important area. From #1 just 25 years ago in education to next to last ahead of only Mississippi I believe. Economically it's bleeding businesses because of wild and crazy Liberal regulations, Sanctuary Cities and environmentally ill phony BS about climate change being other than natural.

Go Arizona, and keep up the good work!

Where are the crazed gunmen that have it out for Westboro Baptist Church?

it's a joke.

You DO know that the metric system has equal legal standing with the English system in the U.S., right?
You do know that the vast majority of USA citizens were too stupid to learn and embrace the metric system, right?

.

I would say stubborn rather than stupid...
Only a stupid person does something so obviously in their own best interest. Either they are not smart enough to recognize the advantages, not smart enough to learn it, or, as stated above, they are just too stupid to care.

Or the change would result in more trouble/cost than it is worth. Much of our stuff, including mechanical and electrical systems, road signs, measuring equipment, etc., are all in the English system. Converting to the metric system would cost a lot of money, even if it was slowly implemented (although, in some places it is happening anyway). Which means that instead of people having to learn one simple system, they have to learn both. Now, this is pretty much happening as well, despite the standard in the US being the English system. But it does come with a lot of issues that cannot simply be put as "too stupid to learn". Especially since many people in the US know both systems, most just use the English system far more often than they do the metric system.

Only a lib would want to ban hate speech.

James, only a lib would want to ban hate speech, only a conservative, (during the Bush years) would call it treason.
