Were I in a situation like that and performed a similar act I would probably be upset with people for focusing on me and certainly would be repulsed at being called a hero. It is a good thing someone prevented more harm, but I do not see reason to say anything beyond that.
It would be odd for the person/s involved to think of themselves as heroes. Most of them likely acted out of instinct....and they're probably aware of that. Some of them probably think later, "WTF was I thinking???!

Yet!! I think it's human nature to label these people as heroes. It's in our genes to reward those people who run forward when others are running the other way. It's probably one of our survival mechanisms....rewarding bravery may beget more bravery. Don't know. But I do know that most people who do what we call "heroic deeds" don't think of themselves as heroes...but most everyone else does. How can we help but admire them?

And tell me, who hasn't fanticized about being a hero themselves? About being in a situation where the rubber meets the road -- and making a decision to put yourself in harm's way for the benefit of others?

It's in our genes, I tell ya'!!!!!

Your first post in this thread, before Crosscheck's comments present the same thing. So my question remains.

I think it is deeply embedded in our culture, but so are many of the clearly bad things. Putting people on pedestals can cloud our judgment and lead us into dangerous thinking. One can admire what a person has done without defining the person by that act.

I never suggested anyone was saying that, but simply asking if she is a hero than what does that make everyone else?

She acted heroically but sheriff doopstick got his facts all wrong as I pointed out early on.

Obviously a sheepdog.... We need more like her in this world...

The virginia tech shooter might have been less succsessful... We teach our childeren to be passive... We increase our chances when we are active. She is a great example of this.
