Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot In Arizona

Yes, but I detect a hint of "passing the buck" of responsibility away from the person pulling the trigger.

I don't care what they saw, heard or read, if they shoot up a function like this, or any body anywhere, they are murderers. Nobody told them to murder. Quit trying to pass the buck.

This is Jared's actions and Jareds only.

No, I would not pass the buck. But there being a person, guilty as all hell of being a murderer and a monster, does not resolve the political entertainers either. Responsiblllity covers all for what they responsible for. No one should get a free pass.

The same reason there was so much condemnation of rap music encouraging violence and teen sex.

Not sure of your point. Clarify if you will.

Early on with Rap music there was the so called Gangsta style of music. It promoted violence and especially drive by shootings.
The artist never directly acted out in the violence, well most of the time they didn't.
But many people were not willing to give the Rappers a free pass for any responsibility in some inncer city violence.

I would not excuse those who acted violently. But I would not excuse those who promoted violence, even through music either. Do we agree?

Suspect Fixated on Giffords - WSJ.com

TUCSON, Ariz.—Accused gunman Jared Lee Loughner appeared to have been long obsessed with U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. A safe at Mr. Loughner's home contained a form letter from Ms. Giffords' office thanking him for attending a 2007 "Congress on your Corner'' event in Tucson. The safe also held an envelope with handwritten notes, including the name of Ms. Giffords, as well as "I planned ahead," "My assassination," and what appeared to be Mr. Loughner's signature, according to an FBI affidavit.

...

Mr. Loughner had complained to a friend about how he was treated by the Arizona lawmaker during an event several years ago, which aggravated Mr. Loughner, according to the friend.

...

Mr. Montanaro said his friend "was never really political," but "really tried to be philosophical." Mr. Loughner liked "contemplating the meaning of words and the origin of language," Mr. Montanaro said. That interest might have triggered Mr. Loughner's first meeting with Ms. Giffords in 2007. Mr. Loughner said he asked the lawmaker, "How do you know words mean anything?" recalled Mr. Montanaro. He said Mr. Loughner was "aggravated" when Ms. Giffords, after pausing for a couple of seconds, "responded to him in Spanish and moved on with the meeting."

People were talking about him in terms of being someone they thought might shoot up the school as long as a year ago:

Excuse them from what? If it's not illegal to do, they need no excuse.

Really? So you feel the internet, and instant access to all the "good, bad and ugly" bears no part in in how information is spread and disseminated?

History shows us that it doesn't have any effect on domestic political assissinations.

There were more assissinations/assissination attempts before the internet than there have been after.

Those looking for a REASON for the shooting are not acting unreasonably, nor is it unreasonable to reject the militant language that has seeped into the political landscape and has intensified in recent years.

I would offer that it is the lack of concern over the reason for the shooting that better reflects the attitudes associated with an unreasonable person and that not caring about the intensification of militant rhetoric does not indicate reason, but simply the avoidance of making a value judgement.

Seems to me a reasonable person would say "enough is enough" in regards to the militant rhetoric rather than chastising those who reject it.

I disagree. The more attention you give the militant rhetoric, the more validity it gets. Dismissal and mocking of it is what needs to happen. A reasonable person doesn't attend, seriously, to stupidity.

Yeah, there must be nothing political about political assassinations.

Context, Gardener. An insane person who assassinates someone for delusional reasons does not equate something political. Also, we are looking at personal responsibility here. There has been idiotic partisan rhetoric going on for ages. How an individual processes that is on them. Reasonable people recognize it is just idiotic rhetoric. Unreasonable people do not. Now, I'm not saying that the rhetoric is OK... it isn't. Nor am I saying that it doesn't factor in at all. However, in this particular case, I don't see it as the "smoking gun".

Gotta say it. Scummiest comment I've seen at DP in a long time. Folks... remember who said this.

And it was made against what I said, in a post in which I was shedding tears trying to finish it. The only post on any forum in 15 years in which I clicked "submit" through tears in my eyes.

DOL might have earned his way onto my ignore list. I don't think he deserves my time in reading anything he has further to say.

I'll say it's safe to assume that if I would say what I truly think about him, I would be perma-banned. But then that let's him win. And I want to be the bigger man in this situation.

Really? Did you not see Chevydriver's post about how he's glad the lady got shot? Not to minimize DOL's comment, but Chevy's was the scummiest I had seen ever, anywhere.

Yeah, that was pretty bad too.

Same guy who regularly defends those scum in Beijing... not surprised...

As for this thread, I am very disappointed at how it has deteriorated...

This is a tragedy. My adult students here have wanted to talk about it, with some making comparisons to our own political shootings in 2004 and 2010. This has shocked many of my students, but when I inform them that the political rhetoric is every bit as poisonous and divisive (if not more so) than here in Taiwan, they then have some understanding. Sadly, it has been a topic of conversation here all day.

My prayers are with the families of all of the victims (dead and wounded), especially the nine-year-old little girl as well as to all children who lost parents. No parent wants to see this happen to their child and no child should grow up without a father or mother...

Sadly, there have been a lot of scummy comments in this thread. Perhaps this is just a symptom of the poisonous divisiveness in the body politic today...
