The fact that this father is trying to prevent his daughter from having consequences is proof positive that some parents today are clueless about teaching their kids personal responsibility.

Are kids going to damage cement? Sure. Even if you teach them it's wrong, they'll do it. They're kids. But when they know it's wrong, they'll deal with the consequences of their bad behavior.

When I was that age, and I ****ed someone's **** up, I was put to work for the person who owned the property I damaged.

If this was my kid, I'd go and tear up the portion of concrete that my kid screwed up and have him/her haul away all of the debris and help me pour and finish the new slab. THEN the kid would have some idea of what they ****ed up exactly and they might have a little more respect for things.

But when you teach them it's OK by preventing them from dealing with the consequences of their criminal behavior, they'll not only continue to commit these types of crimes, but they'll also act like little spoiled brats for the rest of their lives. They'll be under the impression that they are special, when they aren't.
Is this the way you handle your own children?

i do look forward to watching the police haul off the little girl to a prison, in handcuffs, because she was unable to personally pay her $250 fine
or is anyone actually expecting the father to be willing to come up with it

does the government have the authority to do what it has done? certainly
is proceeding in this manner an acceptable use of limited taxpayer resources? my inclination is to side with the father. from reading other posts, it would seem many find it acceptable to waste taxpayer dollars in this manner
It seems to me that this is one of the few instances where our society has decided it takes a village to raise a child. Would it have been easier for the cop to run the kids off? Sure, considering only one of them is paying a fine, it's already cost way more than they'll make back by hauling all those kids in. Will every single one of those kids think twice before doing something illegal? You bet.

And that's where you and I differ.

If these were OLDER kids, like 15 and up... I'd agree. These were 6th graders, fascinated with wet cement. It wasn't criminal mischief, it was judgment lacking kids having fun.

There was NO NEED to haul them to the station, no need for any of this BS.

Proper solution, talk to the kids, explain what they did was wrong, call the folks that laid the cement to smooth out the names and end of story. Maybe even find out who the parents are and call them to pick their kids up at the scene to teach a lesson.

My problem here is over reaction by the police. Period.

They were taught a lesson. That sometimes their lack of judgement is actually an illegal action.

Hell yeah..... throw em in the slammer for a couple of years. That'll really teach em to respect property and not to do any more childish pranks, right ??

I wouldn't be opposed to them doing that also. Considering that's not the punishment in our society for vandalizing property, I'd say it's more pratical to teach them what the actual consequences of their actions are.

Yes. Cause that's exactly what I'm saying.

Their punishment was completely appropriate to a minor crime. They were scared and those with intelligent parents have to write an essay.

Who do you think removes that filth from municipal property? The Graffiti fairy?

And businesses. My Uncles business got tagged about three years ago, the entire back of the place sprayed. Cost him 20k to have it removed and painted over. He had to raise prices in the store to cover the loss.
