Obama aide: Debt limit fight could be "catastrophic"

Members of Congress threatening to vote against raising the debt ceiling are behaving like children. First of all, their sudden concern for the deficit would be a lot more believable if they didn't just vote for a massive tax cut less than two weeks ago. Sure, some people want low taxes/spending and others want high taxes/spending. I understand that. But let's not pretend like the people who voted for a tax cut before any spending cuts have passed - when we already have a massive deficit - are the slightest bit concerned about it. They're just concerned about making Obama look bad.

Fortunately, John Boehner seems to be acting like a responsible adult. Enough Republicans will vote to raise the debt ceiling that it will pass.

Tax cuts don't cause deficits except in your own mind. Stop with the typical liberal talking points and get the facts. Go to the U.S. treasury site and check out the revenue numbers AFTER the tax cuts. What is costing the govt. money now are the additional 4 million unemployed that Obama has helped create with his stimulus plan. Why liberals are against keeping more of what they earn is beyond me. It isn't the government's money, it belongs to the people that earned it.

i agree with you that we need to get our financial house in order, but trying to ram cuts down the presidents throat before you extend the ceiling? if i'm obama, i call your bluff, and let the chips fall where they may, your party has alot more to lose right now...explain to the American people why their government is shutting down, why it can't pay its bills in a timely manner........explain to the american people why the budget deficit is getting bigger because of the extra interest we have to pay to get credit...go ahead, make my day.

How many times did Clinton shutdown the govt. because the GOP gave him spending plans less than he wanted? Shutting down the govt. isn't all bad. Did you notice how much of the budget is interest payments and what percentage of the budget that is?

cherrypick much? perhaps you should read through the entire thread, i believe i've mentioned both sides having skin in the game....you and conservative are twins, you think that all the cuts are going to come from the 'liberal' side...aint gonna happen.

Conservative makes sound and valid points, usually backed up with fact. So if you are comparing me to him, thank you. Problem is there Greenie, I don't believe what you are saying. You do hold a certain problem with credibility.

lol you should be the last one to ever question someones credibility.....

Interesting that I have never seen you refute any of the data I presented but I have seen you ignore it and divert from it preferring instead to give your opinions based upon your feelings. I posted the line items in the budget so tell me what you would cut?

what have you presented other than a list? i'd start with a 10% across the board cut, and then freeze spending at that level for 5 years.

I have never been dishonest about my beliefs have I now...Don't you wish you could say the same?

That is a good start but cutting the budget 360 billion isn't going to get it done. First thing I would do is take SS and Medicare OFF BUDGET where it belongs and then start paying off the IOU's. Then I would cut out the DOE, Agriculture

Expenses

Energy 11.5
Natural resources/env 41.6
Agriculture 23.2
Transportation 92.5
Community Dev 24.5
Education/Train/Social 125.1

Approximately 308 billion

I would then Cut Defense 10% 69 Billion
International Affairs 20 billion and would cut that further by deducting the cost of illegal's getting healthcare in this country thus reducing ER costs
Income Security of over 600 billion is unrealistic and needs to be cut in half. Make people go back to work regardless of whether or not is is THE job 300 billion cut

Then I would attack SS and Medicare focusing first on waste, fraud, and abuse, then focusing on privatizing it for younger workers into a private secure investment account that people could not touch until age 62 and then he fund is theirs.

Good start with more to come

believe what you like j, i believe that you can't think outside the box and that the prospect of having to examine your beliefs terrifies you, easier to just keep your head in the sand.

Oh that is such bull shat, and you know it. I have not only formally debated on the liberal side, but hold some beliefs that are staunchly defended opposingly by conservatives, like on the Gay Marriage issue. No, see the real problem here is that you have been outed, and can't handle that the side of the debate you have now chosen to defend is a losing propisition. Historically, you can not defend that for all of liberal utopian blather, it has never worked out the way they envision it would. And when confronted with that, the response is usually that they haven't been allowed to do enough of it....Well, let me tell you Stallin did enough of it, and Millions died, Mao did enough of it, and Millions died...How many would you like your liberal ideals to kill?

And the unsustainable path we are on will continue. Republicans could have been the ones who stood up and said no to this, but no, they keep it going.

This country is in need of a major surgical procedure we can ironically call "cuts." You can put them off for a little while, but you have to do the surgery or we will die as a nation. I'd rather the surgery sooner rather than later, but it seems that according to the left, it's "acting like an adult" to continue to put off this surgery. Well if that's the case, i'm proud to be childish.

If you want to cut the budget, then you elect a Congress and a president that will cut the budget. You don't vote to default on our obligations.

Total 3537.6

Given that social security and medicare are covered through payroll taxes and are generally well funded currently you really cant cut from those

These leaves 2.4 trillion dollars in spending that can be cut to meet a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit. That math means $1 trillion dollars in spending from the following programs

I cant see defence not getting at least a 20 % cut, while programs like income security and health would have to see at least 50% in cuts.

This is a perfect example of the infantile views I'm talking about...the idea that you can get something for nothing. If cutting taxes actually increased revenue, then why would conservatives even care about spending? We could just cut taxes to pay for all the spending we wanted.

Would you care to explain how you imagine a stimulus INCREASES unemployment?

Regardless of whose money it is, the fact is that the tax cuts are in place and it's a lot of money that the government does not have, that it otherwise would. Now the question is whether we're going to make good on our obligations that result from such policies, or whether we're going to default on them.

Why doesn't America just raise taxes on young working people so that benefits to old people aren't cut? Bingo, we have a winner. Haha.

Maybe Defense can be cut 20% but then where would we get the money to defend Canada? With regard to SS and Medicare they are being funded but the SS "trust fund" has billions in IOU's as Presidents from both parties have used the money on budget. Those IOU's have to be repaid.

Raise taxes on the young. They won't realize what's happening to them. They're like dumb beasts.

With a 14 trillion dollar debt you ask that question? In the real world you have to pay for your debt. I realize that liberals don't live in the real world though. Tax cuts will increase revenue needed to pay off the debt.

Would you care to explain how you imagine a stimulus INCREASES unemployment?

Very simple, there was no stimulus for shovel ready jobs because there were no shovel ready jobs. The stimulus bailed out unions and other Democrat contituent groups and allowed states to not make the tough choices. You bought the rhetoric that the stimulus would keep unemployment from exceeding 8%. How did that work out for us?

Regardless of whose money it is, the fact is that the tax cuts are in place and it's a lot of money that the government does not have, that it otherwise would. Now the question is whether we're going to make good on our obligations that result from such policies, or whether we're going to default on them.

Regardless of whose money it is? Unfortunately that is the liberal line, it certainly isn't the government's. What do you do when you have less money? My bet is you cut spending yet don't hold the govt. to the same standards. You buy that every dime the govt. says it needs is what it really needs. Nothing could be further from the truth as evidenced by the massive growth in size of govt. the last two years. Until the govt. gets control of its finances and comes up with the plan to cut spending, the hell with the debt ceiling, don't raise it. We have 400 billion dollars to go before that is necessary so you cut spending then address the debt ceiling.

Sorry, who are you defending us from?

Anyone that wants to attack you. Maybe we could Ask Africa for the 100 billion Bush spent on Africa to eradicate AIDS. The first country anyone goes to when they need help is the U.S. Maybe in South Africa you missed the news that Radical Islam wants even you dead.

Trolling of unbelievable proportions.

Nice try to get a rise of me though.
