Navy opens investigation into raunchy videos

The ONLY good thing I can see coming out of this is if they string an officer up by his nutsack. I served under too many officers to count. Many, many, more times, than not, they were pure-dee-assholes. They would go out of their arrogant way to bring grief upon the enlisted. So, they get no sympathy from me. Rather, they get a one-finger salute. LOL!
This I agree with... though not knowing if this XO is one of those assholes. But this was rather tame stuff over all. If people actually saw what goes on sometimes - they'd be shocked.

Do people not use the saying "cuss like a sailor" anymore? :2razz:

Hang 'em from the yardarms! Wooohooo! Go Navy!

I served with some really good officers, and the ones like you describe where rare. We did have an admirals son come through, and he was just exactly what you describe though.

Erm...maybe it's me not being in the military but I dont really see a reason to flip ****. No, it isnt professional and probably not something they should be doing, but does it really warrant such a heavy response?

Officers--no matter which service--order their subordinates to take human lives. They also order their subordinates to place their own lives at great risk. These orders must be followed, to the letter, without question. That being the case, the officers that give those orders can never have their leadership, or their authority brought into question.

This guy did exactly that. He put himself in a position, where if he gave an order to an enlisted man, that enlisted man may say, "well, he's just one-a-the guys. I saw that video and he looks cool, so I'm just not going to follow this order." He may be disobeying an order to clean the toilet, or he may be disobeying an order, the purpose of which, is to save the lives of other sailors. Both orders are equally important.

I served under officers like that. I also served under officers that wanted to be your padnuh. I have a hard time deciding which is worse.

A good officer knows where the happy medium is between those two extremes. Those officers are kinda rare.

In my mind, there's only one rightful captain of the Enterprise anyway.

I forgot one thing.

I will never look at Spuddy's Sock Puppet Welcome in the same way again...

As a former member of the Armed services I have only one thing to say about this issue. Captain Owen Honors is a digrace. Under the UCMJ Article 133 he is guilty of conduct unbecoming and officer and he should be court martialed.

The top 3 statements made by morons before they did something regretful. Amazing people continue to fall into this trap.

"Let's Video Tape this"

" Hey watch this"

"I think that microphone is off"

Apparently some official says the Captain will be relieved of command, as we expected.

That's the answer, isn't it? "Conduct unbecoming....."

It's not that bad, but it's totally unprofessional for someone in a leadership position to put together a video like this -- and I guess it's one of many. It's one thing for an XO or a Captain or an Admiral to ignore something the guys put together. (Wink-wink-nod-nod) It's quite another to be the guy puttin' it together.

And now he's the Captain. Not for long, I'm guessing.

can't agree here. it would be unprofessional to ignore it as well as create it , and now i'm happy he's been relieved of his position. pos.

I understand the decision and don't think it is a terrible one, but I do think it is an overreaction.

I quite agree. As having served in the Army one of the XO's duties is to be in charge of troop morale. I think this may in hindsight been an inappropriate move on his part, I think it was an attempt to lighten up the mood. Always a risk, but having served under some pretty dry XO's, at least he tried.

Some of the things we did where a whole lot worse than this, and no one cared. At least he was not having a showing of Barnyard Follies.

I think the problem lies in that he was "the old man". COs are held to a higher standard. Things you can get away with as an XO or company grade officer you can't get away with as the boss. Or were all these vids made while he was still the XO?

they were made when he was XO.... a new admiral came into the fleet and curtailed the videos. Now he's CO (or was).

That's right, shame really...this really is a question of how much the past effects us....Too bad really, we may be tossing out a really good commander, on the basis of PC.

I have trouble providing the label of "good commander" to someone that not only willing participates in bigotry and alienation of military personnel but orchestrates the production and mass distribution of video's promoting said bigotry.

I haven't watched the vids. can't at work, don't care enough to at home. but unless he was filming illegal activity or engaging in illegal activity, WTF.... Sometimes I think TPTB have a very large stick shoved up their collective asses.

Sorta. he as the XO when he made these, not the old man. It's not something the XO should be doing pushing any boundaries of good taste, but then again he did not push them far. It's one of those technically wrong things that in my day we would have looked the other way.

I honestly think it is was a matter of timing and that someone had an axe to grind against him. he probably got command over someone who got pissed and ratted him out.

Well, we'll never know now will we? He has been relieved. So I guess the lesson is better not step on any toes of the TGLGB crowd or they will get you. Great.

Nah. There are 6k people on a carrier. It only takes one person to make a fuss.

Kids, these days video is trivial, and it's a common pass time to use video to communicate all sorts of things these days. 10 years ago you'd have to have to have put a lot more effort into taking a video, and it would also not have been one's first thought. These days, it's just part of every-day communication. We take videos of everything, much of which my parents "would not have been caught dead making a video of".

Anyway, up to the military to figure out their video-culture change. high ranking officials often participate in comedy roasts, doing stupid or funny jokes, skits, etc. If this was a homebrew version, oh well.
