N.J. lawmaker questions absence of Christie, lt. gov. during blizzard

It doesn't look good for the governor to be out of the state when an official state of of emergency is declared, and I think people have a right to expect their elected officials to be present during any kind of crisis even if arguably there isn't much that person could do if they were there.

During blizzards things pretty much come to a halt. Not much anyone can do if they aren't involved in snow removal. I guess you'd just feel better better if Christie was snowed in too.

Well, it was time for that Avatar space to have its first black incumbent :2razz: I mean African American, I mean, what the hell do they call them in the 24th century?

People...

Hopefully by then skin color won't matter to anyone... HEY! that means they'll all be conservatives!

I guess I have a different perspective on leadership than you.

Stupid Question:

Governors have Phones right? So if the Gov say calls the ACTING Gov to make that declaration, how is that different then the Gov actually BEING there? Just to make you feel better? It's winter, it's a blizzard, it happens. The real outrage is the Dem lawmaker "not letting a crisis" go to waste and trying to score political points out of what really, is not a big deal.

From my experience in the Army I expect leadership, and my subordinates expect it from me, to be present and suffer through whatever they are going through even if I cannot change anything about the situation. Why, because Im in charge thats why. But like I said thats just my perspective, and for me to respect some in a position of leadership or authority they cannot be aloof and distant to whats going on.

Someone quick call Obama to come home from vacation! Christie has deserted NJ and they need leadership. They have snow!

Obama steps out in Hawaii for shave ice treat - Forbes.com

Dressed casually in a black polo shirt, khaki shorts and flip-flops, Obama ordered a melon, lemon-lime and cherry shave ice at Island Snow, a store he has frequented during past trips to Hawaii.
He offered a ringing endorsement for his flavor combination, proclaiming it "really good."
Obama chatted with excited workers and asked them about their holidays as he placed about a dozen more orders for daughters Malia and Sasha as well as several family friends from Hawaii and Chicago who have joined Obama here. Obama's party stood outside enjoying their treats under cloudy skies.
The president spent much of the cloudy, drizzly Hawaiian day indoors at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, bowling with his daughters and playing basketball with friends.
The base has become a sanctuary for the president on his Hawaiian vacations. The president golfs on the base course, the first couple uses its gym for morning workouts and the first family often visits a secluded beach here.
But Obamas haven't had much in the way of beach weather. Clouds hung over the island of Oahu on Monday, and more rain is forecast throughout the week.
The Obamas are expected to stay in Hawaii through Jan. 2.

Diversionary tactics by changing topics? We were talking about a specific state governor and now we are talking about the President, as if Barack Obama going on a vacation has anything to do with what we were talking about or pointing out that he's on vacation is going to make me change my mind? Because after all I can't deny my God so therefore you've caught me, either I admit my opinion is hypocritical or change it. O noes!!

But if you want to bring it up fine. Here's my opinion, the President should be in the White House if the whole nation is under a state of emergency, since being the President he has national responsibilities. A governor should be around if his whole state is under a state of emergency since he only has responsibilities for his state.

And if there was anything Christie could do in NJ that he can't do from Florida, I'd agree with you.

I live in NJ. Christie is an idiot. But there was no reason for him to fly back here because of the blizzard. Anything he could do, in this day and age of modern communication, he could do from Florida... even be an idiot. ;) I may not like him, but this is not an issue to ride him about. Not a big deal at all.

Any problems in NJ? I realize that they had a lot of snow, but did Christie's absence lead to a poor government response? From what I can tell, no one here has claimed that the response is bad. Mostly, they just seem jealous that he's not freezing his ass off too.

They didn't do a great job on the roads... of course, I have a high tolerance for poor roads and drive in near anything, so I was the only one in my office who went to work, yesterday. In truth, I see the response as similar to other severe snowstorms we've had... which is usually pretty good. The roads were a little mssier than I've seen them in the past, but all in all, I'd say the response was fine. Like I said, this is a non-issue. Christie didn't need to end his vacation and come home. Whatever he did... if he did anything, he could do by phone. The state was fine.

Christie should get back to New Jersey.

Doubt that Christie could provide any better leadership if he was on the phone in his office versus on the phone from Florida. But the issue is more one of appearance and protocol. New Jersey is in a declared state of emergency. And the Governor has the responsibility and accountability for the welfare of the State that he leads.

This one doesn't seem complex. As soon as the storm hit and the emergency was officially declared, Christie should have had his butt on the next plane/bus/car heading back to NJ.

I understand how it may look, but I am less about appearence and more about action. There is nothing that he could do here that he can't do there regarding this emergency. It's snow. We get storms like this about once a year. Not a big deal. Public Works has it well under control.

I think that most are either complaining for partisan reasons, or that they don't like the man. But hat tip to you CC. You don't like him, but your response is certainly reasonable.

Thank you. There are some things that just go beyond whether you like or don't like someone. I have no problem with Christie being in Florida. I'm in an area that was especially hard hit with snow. We're fine and managing. I generally like how NJ handles snow removal and as this is his first experience as governor with this, I see no difference than I have in the past. To me, what that means, is that he's managed it fine.

Yeah, what ever will we do? Oh noez! It's the dreaded evil snow and Christie is out of the state!

But really... the bastard should have been at my house at 8 am and shovel my driveway. Guy never showed and was on vacation at Disney. What a jerk huh?

Congratulations for passing over everything else I said and pretending you're actually addressing a position of mine. Now to be more specific for you, that position would be that there is something specifically for him to do, which I already quite clearly addressed.

He was at MY house shoveling. Guess he wants my vote more than yours. :2razz:

Wait. Aren't you the one whining about how the lack of MSM action in this thread, is justified because it's "not news", yet, you clearly have a serious position about Christie being on vacation during a snow storm.

Don't be surprised when no one takes you seriously any more. I know I don't.

Bet you promised him a tip too. Now I'll have to get donuts next year to entice him back. Damn.

If it weren't for that damn global warming, you wouldn't even need a snow shovel.

How are those related? And I don't have a serious issue, in fact I don't really care what he does. I'm just offering an opinion on the situation, but that doesn't mean I think if the man doesn't act in the way my opinion says he should that its a serious problem.

Again going back to my previous posts which you clearly haven't read, if I say something like "even though I know there's not much he can do if he was there" that probably means him being there isn't a huge deal for me.
