    I definately prefer duals.

Duals work in a method where you actually have more tread making contact with the road surface at any given time. So say in wet, or snowy conditions you might break traction with say one sides axle. That with a Super single is 1/8 of your total pulling force, where as with duals, it is still fundamentally 1/8 but because you have actually 8 separate tires making contact, your power is doubled.

Re: U.S. proposes cellphone ban for truck drivers

As far as a "ban" goes, we already have laws for crap like this, "reckless driving"

    Now onto truck drivers....

Many are complete and utter dooshbags, flipping into the left lane 20 under the speed limit to try to pass another truck cutting off cars going the speed limit.

tailgaiting folks when they are banned in the left lane.......

Not clearing ice off the tops of thier trucks....

the list goes on. Now there are some good drivers out there, but far to many truck drivers are complete assholes.....

Um, Rev I gotta take issue with the rest of this post from you....Trucks moving into the left lane aren't doing that to piss you off, or to hamper your progress on the highway. Many are doing that to keep their speed up on grade, saving fuel milage, as well as keeping a clear lane to drive in for safety purposes. Also many turn on their flashers long before they actually make that move, so possibly if you paid attention, and allowed them a lane to pass safely, rather than speeding up to block them in, they wouldn't have to cut you off.

tailgaiting folks when they are banned in the left lane.......
I never agree with tailgating, especially in my rig, but I too have seen it happen. And when I do, if it is egregious I usually say something on my CB.

Not clearing ice off the tops of thier trucks....
Covered this earlier, but let me ask just how you would propose we do this? Trailer tops are in most cases made of thin aluminum, or plastic which wont support the weight of a man up there shoveling. Not to mention the time involved. We have as it stands now, 14 hours split between 11 hours of driving time, and 3 hours of on duty not driving time to get our loads safely to their destinations. And now some want that driving time cut further. Now, my average load travels about 570 miles one way, with a truck capped at 62mph. I want you to do the math. Us "doochbags" as you put it, need to keep a schedule so that you fine citizens can have your goods. Traffic jams, weather, and accidents all play a part in driving time that averages around 50 mph...I don't have time to shovel snow so that you can tailgate me with out the fear of getting a little snow surprise.

the list goes on. Now there are some good drivers out there, but far to many truck drivers are complete assholes.....
I'd say there are far more inconsiderate four wheelers on the roads causing the bulk of accidents than truckers just trying to do a job.

true, however, one weighs a whole lot more and can do much much more damage.

actually I don't think its to "piss me off" its more that they don't care. And I've seen the ones flash, and I let them in, especially if I see one that looks like its struggling. It's the ones who whip into the lane forcing cars to jam on thier breaks so they can do 50 in a 65 so they can maintain thier speed. Your fuel consumption should not come at the cost of my safety.

And again, it's not all. but there is a significant amount that are careless of others here. And no cars are not immune. trucks are just far more deadly.

I see it all the time, 287, rt 17, right on the asses of cars because they can't go in the left lane.... I yell at em too... they don't care..

Use the rail system more. And no, your not all dooshbags, but some of you are. so are drivers.....

a 300 electrical defroster outfitted on new trailers that melts the crap or something, I don't know. But your "schedule" is not worth my life.... (I had a 10 ft piece of ice come at me a few years ago off the top of the truck, missed me., and hit this poor lady right at the windshield, shattered, she flew off the road. I followed her called the police, aned radioed the truck driver what happened. Said wasn't his problem, right up until I read his trailer plate back to him....

when it becomes ice its deadly.... Something should be done. not caring shouldn't be an option.....

I agree... that said a truck is a lot bigger, and they can be just as inconsiderate and cause more problems due to thier size. plus they are supposed to be professionals.

Well, that is more the exception than the rule. I know that the NE corridor is a nightmare, I drove it for years. I really think that auto drivers need to be instructed in the Smith System like truckers are. Far too many of these situations you are speaking of stem from inconsiderate four wheelers then they do trucks.

And again, it's not all. but there is a significant amount that are careless of others here. And no cars are not immune. trucks are just far more deadly.
Then you should call the authorities. I, as a professional don't want to be on the road with careless 18 wheelers any more than you do. Part of this problem though is the over regulation that is forcing veterans of the road like me out, and in our place comes inexperienced young drivers that think they know it all.

I see it all the time, 287, rt 17, right on the asses of cars because they can't go in the left lane.... I yell at em too... they don't care..
report em....NJDOT has no patience for careless truckers.

    Use the rail system more.
And put us out of work.....Thanks.

And no, your not all dooshbags, but some of you are. so are drivers.....

Another cost to companies that will not be taken on unless mandated by law. Companies like logistics companies run on extremely slim margins. They just won't spend the money.

when it becomes ice its deadly.... Something should be done. not caring shouldn't be an option.....
It's not the drivers that don't care though. Most are company drivers.

Regarding the trailer roof ice bit:

Would it be possible to retrofit old or have new trailers built with a roof composed of a material that ice didn't freeze too (if such exists)? If that’s not already the case.

Perhaps with a slight slope built in?

A defroster sounds good, but it would seemingly vastly increase the cost of trailer roofs – to the point that it might be cheaper to deal with lawsuits for the companies…

And a curved or sloped roof would either increase the height of the trailer (hitting low bridges, anyone?) or decrease the cargo area available…

    Hmm…

Should mount a powered street-sweeper-like brush at trailer roof height, and just have trucks drive under it…Perhaps with a de-icing spray beforehand…Have a bay or ten at those truck stops I see in my area…

    Blah.
