It means he's nowhere near as liberal as his detractors make him out to be.

That's a possibility I think is pretty remote. He's not a believer in ruthlessness as a legitimate means of persuasion. I think he's trapped.

Obama has no place to put these folks any more. Not Gitmo. Bagram's prison is bursting at the seams because the miscreants can't be transferred to Afghan custody. They would let them go.

He's reactivated extraordinary rendition for torture overseas, but the really interesting thing is his escalation in the use of drone strikes. I have the impression Obama prefers to simply kill jihadis rather than capture and interrogate them.

What does the one have to do with the other?

Do I really have to explain what a liberal's position on extraordinary rendition would be? You can't be serious.

    1) You make it sound like it's exclusively a "liberal" position.

    2) You also make sound like liberal administrations didn't make use of it just as often as "conservative" ones.

This is one of those things which was never a problem until Bush did it.

Snatches, or more properly "extraordinary renditions," were operations to apprehend terrorists abroad, usually without the knowledge of and almost always without public acknowledgement of the host government.... The first time I proposed a snatch, in 1993, the White House Counsel, Lloyd Cutler, demanded a meeting with the President to explain how it violated international law. Clinton had seemed to be siding with Cutler until Al Gore belatedly joined the meeting, having just flown overnight from South Africa. Clinton recapped the arguments on both sides for Gore: Lloyd says this. Dick says that. Gore laughed and said, "That's a no-brainer. Of course it's a violation of international law, that's why it's a covert action. The guy is a terrorist. Go grab his ass."

I guess Al Gore is not a liberal. Who are we kidding? He's one of the most liberal people in the country.
