    Weeeeeeelllll.... yes and no.

Gamecocks are disposed to fight anyway. It's their nature. Granted, nature didn't put steel spurs on them, Man did that. Still, they are fighters by nature.

Fighting dogs are usually pit bulls. I know a little something about this, because I knew a man whose past included dog fighting. A dog could turn away from the other dog and not fight... this happens sometimes.

Now granted, a lot of owners put down dogs that refuse to fight. Others just retire them when they lose their nerve. Lots of people think that is barbaric.

A lot of people don't know that many other kinds of dog trainers do much the same thing. I knew a breeder of bear-hunting-dogs... when one of the dogs they were raising showed fear of a bear, and refused to track bear scent, they took them back home and put them down. They didn't want the dog to spread his genes in their breeding stock, and had no use for him as a "useless mouth".

Animal shelters put down millions of dogs every year, for the crime of being unwanted.

Frankly, a big part of why many States outlaw cock and dog fighting has little or nothing to do with humanitarian concerns, but is rather about the politician's fury that gambling is going on and they are not getting their cut of the tax revenues.

I don't care for dog fighting or cock fighting myself... but I don't see why it should be a felony in most cases.

Especially cock fighting. They're chickens, for cryin' out loud. We eat hundreds of millions of chickens every year. We stuff them in tiny cages and take their eggs and kill them when they stop laying. Chickens are incredibly stupid creatures. They barely have enough brain to even stay alive without human oversight. No way would I make a man a felon over a freakin' chicken.

Right, the Pit Bulls and roosters put themselves in the fighting ring, just like the people do.

Bet you wish we'd bring back bear baiting and bull fighting, huh?

Show me one multi-million dollar millionaire MMA fighter or boxer and I'll show you one retired ex-fighter. Most actual fighters use boxing as a tool to wedge themselves out of poverty. To them, it's the only way out. Since fighting has been their forte all along, they select it as their device of escape. To them, they have no choice either.

We are a predacious species. At one time, we hunted for our food. We killed, and our hunger was satisfied. We warred and plundered, our tribe would be all the richer for it. We fought our dogs and our quest for violent entertainment was fulfilled. We'd eat the loser!

Oh, but that was so long ago...We're much more civilized now...

we already put many restrictions on criminals after they have paid their dues. how is this any different?
Out of these three, I believe prohibiting a felon who has paid his debt to society from obtaining a gun is unconstitutional. What gives the state the right to prevent a man from defending himself? If said felon actually tries to rebuild his life, he gets royally ****ed when criminals find out that the man cannot obtain the proper weapon to defend him from thuggery.

Yes, he should be able to get a dog. He should get it from a kill shelter though, and save it from being put down.

At one point slaves were considered property what is your point? It is determined by society. Though I like having pets, you should treat them as a living being and not an object.

The point is that we as humans exploit whatever is in our environment to satisfy our own selfish needs or desires. We will do this until we become gluttons of fulfilling our whimsical hungers. Of course, we usually take the least amount of risk in accomplishing our selfish objectives, regardless as to the magnitude of reward.

Fighting one another requires skill, a certain degree of athleticism, and a higher threshold for pain. Paying someone else to fight is another alternative to quench our thirst for aggression, violence, and bloodshed. Capturing other animals and making them fight is just another ploy that we use to entertain ourselves by satisfying our thirst for aggression and violence.

As children, we used to capture butterflies, preying mantis, bumble bees, and wasps. We'd place any combination into a large just to make them fight or eat one another. To us as children, that was fun. If the insects appeared not to be interested in engagement we'd just shake the jar in order to agitate them into an aggressive state. It almost always worked. We'd talk about the fight between various insects for weeks.

It's in our nature to control the variables within our environment to the point that we satisfy all of our senses. Humans have a sense or natural proclivity for both violence and competition. We manifest this desire through wars, hunting, sports, and games.

When we hunt, we satisfy our need for food. We've also out-smarted the prey. When we war, we satisfy our egos and our need to dominate through violence. When we employ the shooting sports, we exhibit our exact capacity or potential for violence using a specific weapon type. When playing games or certain sports, we demonstrate our capacity to use strategies while employing violence and aggression in a more methodical manner.

Fighting cocks and dogs are very low-risk forms of entertainment that satisfies certain humans' thirst or quest for violence. While I don't personally endorse or ascribe to any form of this type of behavior, I do understand its roots.

Vick should be allowd to have a dog! Why not?

That's like letting a child molester live next to an elementary school, don't you think?

I find it disgusting how many die hard sports fans are willing to give Vick a pass over something this atrocious! It is like just cause he has "game" that all is forgiven..
