Don't ask don't tell: House approves repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell' - latimes.com

Reporting from Washington —
After stumbling last week, the effort to end the policy banning gay troops from serving openly in the military received a boost Wednesday, as the House approved a measure repealing the policy in an effort to force the Senate to do the same before lawmakers go home for the holidays.

The House vote on the "don't ask, don't tell" policy -- essentially a repeat of a similar vote in May -- puts fresh pressure on the Senate leaders to prioritize the repeal as they struggle to schedule votes on a handful of last-chance priorities for Democrats.

The final tally was 250 to 175, mostly along party lines.

It was virtually dead, but it has crawled back up in a last minute effort. All that stands in the way now is if there is enough time to debate it and Reid has suggested he would extend the session past the weekend if the House managed to pass it.

This stand alone repeal should pass, and it's great news.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

Wonder when the Senate will vote on it.

Still very much up in the air, hopefully before end of session, but that is far from guaranteed.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

It'll be very interesting to see what happens.
Let's just hope that if it does pass, that things don't change much--that everyone stays professional and neat.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

In the thread on the senate try at this bill (or some incarnation of it), someone who opposed removing it (or seemed to) mentioned something about DADT removal not having any affect on a separate rule that basically says "gay people cannot serve in the military", or something to that effect.

And that DADT removal wouldn't change that...anyone know what he was talking about?

Cause, if they remove DADT, and people can still get kicked out because of another rule...

And since I'm not any too clear (by any stretch) on military regulations in any area, let alone a specific one...

IIRC, the original ban was replaced with DADT. Gays can serve legally in the military, they just can't be open.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

I think eveyone knew the house would pass the bill....Its a different thing in the Senate.....First of all they don't have the votes.....Secondly there is not time...Friday is the last day of the session and it has to go through committee with 14 votes there and then to the floor of the senate where there have to be hearings...A filibuster by the McCain forces is a definite possibility...

It will have to wait until the new congress comes in January where the Republicans picks up 6 votes in the Senate.....DADT is doomed........

'Don't ask, don't tell' passes handily in House of Representatives - Scott Wong - POLITICO.com

Levin said he had no idea when the House-passed repeal bill might come up in the Senate. “I’m working on my bill,” he told reporters. “I’m a co-sponsor of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ ... I hope it comes up, but I’m working on a defense bill.”

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) failed to even mention the repeal bill in his opening floor remarks Wednesday, though he ticked through a host of other Democratic lame-duck priorities he hopes to complete by next week: tax cuts, a government spending bill, the START arms-control treaty, an immigration measure, health care for Sept. 11 first responders and confirmation of presidential nominees.

Except, there has been a threat that Reid will make the Senate stay in session to vote for this or go back to work right after Christmas. And it is quite possible that this will have the votes to pass. Not every Republican is against this repeal. Even some of those who did vote against it in previous votes claim that it was because of procedures or other things in the same bill.

McCain needs to move out of the way and let the military have what it is asking for, the repeal of DADT.

...DADT is doomed........

*waits for NP to realize his Freudian slip*

A majority of the House, the president, the secretary of defense, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and most of the American public want to see this policy ended. Most of the military does not even care. This is no longer a winning policy for Republicans to support. DADT is doomed.

It's a strange thing to see so many senators fighting for something the people don't even support anymore.

If you think that Reid is going to keep the Senate in session over the holidays you live in a dream world...........This whole thing is about the gay vote........The dems woulkd sell their souls for it..........Reid did not even mention DADT in his things to be done.......Reid give DADT lip service but actually he is dead against it.........He is a Mormon and homosexuality is against his belief.......Reid did not even mention it on the things to be done prior to the Senate adjourning..........At best it does not look good

Do you support Obamacare?

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

If Reid gets it to a vote, he's got at least 5 Republican Senators who will vote for repeal, Collins, Snowe, Murkowski, Lugar, and Brown. All announced. So I think a filibuster cannot happen, and with those five, it will pass if it gets a vote.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

Do you support Obamacare?

Not a simple question. I like parts, dislike parts. I am very split on it.

Yeah, but, but, the will of the people...

What about the will of our service members? Does their opinion count?

67% of the Marines that serve in combat arms units oppose the repeal. 58% of Army soldiers that serve in combat arms units oppose the repeal. The Chiefs of Staff for the Army and the Air Force and the Commandant of Marine Corps oppose it. You've been telling us all this time that the military, including the big brass, all support the repeal.

Surely, ya'll haven't ben dishonest about the real numbers?

And the Dems not pushing this through, would make them lose votes. Especially when there is at least one Repub. (Collins) who is pushing it. Do you think Reid would vote against this?

The will of the people refers to all people, not just those you want to include. If you are going to reference the will of the people, you should at least be consistent, and not use it part time when it serves your purposes(you being generic and not referring to you specifically).

Ok, but the question must be asked: when you were espousing that the military was all for abolishing DADT, you left the previously posted information out of your argument; claiming that all the brass and most soldiers were for it.

Why?

If you were arguing that openly gay troops shouldn't be allowed to serve in combat positions, then maybe you would have an argument, but you are arguing that no gay troops should be allowed to serve openly in any capacity.
