House approves repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell'(edited)

I was a nuke though. I am of the opinion that there are more gays in that field than many other fields in the military, but it is only my opinion. A lot of the gay men were ETs and EMs, the lesbians were both MMs and one of them had a girlfriend on the ship from another department (and there were a couple of girls who were bi). Many of the men sat at the same table during most meals. And the entire boat was pretty sure that the Legal Officer was gay.

Of course, I have also heard stories from my husband about getting hit on while he was on the LHD by sailors. And I did have a Marine on an LHD come out to his buddy on my balcony in Hawaii. That was funny. My sister had brought them home (she wanted to get with the one who wasn't gay). The straight one's reaction was more of "why do all the marines who are gay come out to me".

That line cracked me up!

Your husband is on an LHD? Those look so cool. I really want to see their deck in operation, see how it works.

So how different is a transgender person from a homosexual?

One is a person with a gender identity thing going, the other is a person who is attracted to the same sex. Nothing at all alike actually.

Transgender used to be one sex and now is another, or wants to be one sex, and is another...I think. The whole sex-change operation bit?

Gays have no desire to change sex.

Gender Identity has nothing to do with sexual orientation. One can be transgender and straight, gay/lesbian, bi. The two aren't really connected.

Based on my very limited observation, one co-worker, the trans gender person is more conflicted by comparison. Imagine a man becoming a woman surgically but body building to the point of looking like a man again...even her children were confused about it...
plus she wanted to talk about it too much. We co-workers weren't interested in the situation, but she thought we were...

I'm gonna get the bubbly ready for the final vote at 3pm. They only need a simple majority now and the Dems alone should have it. With Republicans taking virtual control for the next 2-4 years, gay rights advocates are not going to see many victories over the next few years. I suspect if gay rights advocates have any major court victories then 2012 will be like 2008 in that a central focus will be a amendment to the Constitution banning gay marriage.

So excited!!:2dancing:

So what about gays who like to occasionally crossdress. Are they ok?

As ok as strait people who like to crossdress. Doesn't bother me in the least, but then again I knew the staff at a bar that featured cross dressing entertainment in Detroit when I was young.

Edit to add: Just to be clear, restrictions on crossdressing in the navy do not need to change(I am sure there are some, at least involving uniforms and onbase). Showing up to work in the other sex's uniform won't work. This is however, an entirely different issue from DADT and gays in the military.

This would not be possible without conservative support like mine. Don't make this a conservative/leftist issue or conservatives who support you will be forced to eat spip by our fellow conservatives.

Are trans people banned from the military?

Indeed, and I am giving a mental shoutout to all the Republicans who voted for equality. I imagine it was harder for them than the democrats.

Hail to moderate conservatives!

Is that better?

To be honest, I have no idea.

By the way, with the vote today...when you signing up? I recommend Navy. It's not just a job you know.

Holy ****! That is true. I could get my license and join the Navy now if I wanted. It's like waking up in a new world.

First of all, straight people can be transgendered. Men who are attracted to women can also want to be women, just like men who are attracted to men.

Second of all, with military uniforms mostly being unisex or at least having very few differences between the two (although there are some exceptions), it really wouldn't be too important for someone who was just a crossdresser to just dress in the uniform of their own gender. And those who are truly transgendered will probably try to get permission to be able to always dress and actually live as the gender that they feel they should be. Or if there are transgendered people (who have already changed permanently) that want to actually join up (I'm pretty sure post-surgery or post-any physical changes transgendered people cannot join the military) may take up that battle. I am for it but see a lot more issues with this than allowing gays to serve openly.

Transgendered personnel and/or crossdressers would be asking for special rules to a point, although I think that they could eventually be accomodated, just not sure that it should be done right now, at least not as far as uniforms as concerned. I absolutely believe that if a crossdressing man (doesn't much matter for women, since women can wear most of the same clothes men do without anyone even thinking twice about it) wants to dress as a woman in his own time, especially off base, that this should not even be an issue, although I'm pretty certain there is no rule actually against doing this as long as they are not bringing attention to their military status (i.e. wearing the uniform of the opposite sex in public).

He was on a LHD as a Marine (before we met). I don't know how much he seen of it. According to him, Marines do very little aboard those ships besides taking care of their own equipment. It sounded like they were just passengers, for the most part.

So just like regular carriers then for them?

I took the marine XO up on deck during ops one day. His comment after "I thought I was brave..."

They still serve though. They're just not open.

That won't be changing with this repeal. Further, they can be asked from what I understand now.

I guess. We had no marines on my carrier. I don't know if any actual carriers have had marines aboard for a while.
