House approves repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell'(edited)

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

You don't get it my left wing friend...Since 1993 gays have had to keep quiet about the sexual preference...People signed up under that law being in effect and now the gov is trying to change their contract with the people.........

Military regs change all the time Navy. People don't get the option to get out whenever the rules change.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

Most gays that are outted or come forward and admit the are gay to their CO are disccharged with honorable discharges..........

Correct, but that is not the situation you described.

It's not in the contract!!!!!

We are talking about a law here Redress........Everyone is not liberal like you.........as I said some people by their religeous upbringing hate homosexuality.........They did not join the military to be around gays serving openly..........If the gov opts out then they should be allowed to do so to....

OK Navy, here is the document you sign when you enlist these days: http://usmilitary.about.com/library/pdf/enlistment.pdf

Show me what part of this would be violated is DADT is repealed.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

Correct, but that is not the situation you described.

As you know I am and old country boy and maybe do not express myself the way I mean...............

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

DADT is........(Confused)

No it isn't actually. It is part of military regulations and DoD directives that you agree to obey.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

I read it but don't see your point...I think we are in agreement since 1993 what the law is............

My point is that no contract is breached.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

DADT is........(Confused)

It's not mentioned in the enlistment contract AT ALL.

http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/infomgt/forms/eforms/dd0004.pdf

But guess what is:

FOR ALL ENLISTEES OR REENLISTEES:
I understand that many laws, regulations, and military customs
will govern my conduct and require me to do things under this
agreement that a civilian does not have to do. I also understand
that various laws, some of which are listed in this agreement,
directly affect this enlistment/reenlistment agreement. Some
examples of how existing laws may affect this agreement are
explained in paragraphs 10 and 11. I understand that I cannot
change these laws but that Congress may change these laws, or
pass new laws, at any time that may affect this agreement, and that
I will be subject to those laws and any changes they make to this
agreement.
I further understand that:

Can we be done with this ridiculous contract business now?

Come on Redress regs are changed all the time in the military.......you don't need and act of congress to do that.....DADT is a different matter..........Don't insult my intelligence because I don't insult yours...........

That comment was in response to your comment that DADT was part of the enlistment contract.

If I said that It is not what I meant..............we shall see what happens if DADT is repealed and shoved down everyines throat against their will.......

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

Not really things like that can be repealed........I know the military is not a democracy but there is a certain line you should not go over...........

You mean like forcing a group of people live under a more stringent set of rules than the rest of the military? I agree, that is something we should never do.

They joined knowing those rules!!!!!! no one forced them...........

By the way that link you cited even said that if everything fell right you still don't have the votes in the senate to repeal DADT....How do you feel about that?

It says right in the contract that Congress can change the laws and the military has to abide by it. I think we're done.

Re: DADT repeal still has a shot!

Remember, the will of the people is tantamount, unless the people are wrong--conservative logic.

lol. Here in California the liberal judges, governor and attorney general just overturned the will of the people on gay marriage -- liberal logic

I don't know about "liberal logic." A better name would be "role of the judicial system."

No, it goes beyond “the role of the judicial system” because, as I noted, the Gov and AG refused to represent the will of the people.

Here’s where you explain that with some “liberal logic”

Now I realize I don't live in California anymore, but Ahnold was still governer last I checked. Did he switch parties?

Regardless of what he does and doesn't support, the role of the judicial system is still to strike down laws that are unconstitutional. You can disagree with the judge's ruling, but not her role.

For instance, I very much oppose the Supreme Court's ruling on campaign donation limits for corporations. But I don't think they didn't have the right to make the ruling.
