Senators load spending bill with earmarks

I've always thought it was weird how people focus on earmarks instead of what actually goes into the various departments. 8 Billion for earmarks is some giant waste, but the DOD spending twice that on a weapon system we'll never use doesn't get much attention.

Earmarks aren't always bad. Sometimes they're specific projects that are important and beneficial to the community.

ZOMG SOCIALISM GOVERNMENT WASTE FRAUDD.

I guess that means you were mad as hell, when, recently, Stealfromus money was used to fund a trip to China...to study dinosaur eggs?

Senators slam MSU for using stimulus money for China trip

It won't hurt them at all. You see, over all there will be criticism, but as their states benefit, they will still likely win their reelection because of the pork and not despite them.
My thoughts in red
In the waning days of the lame-duck congressional session, Democrats controlling the Senate — in collaboration with a handful of old-school Republicans —[/U](whoever they are, they better be careful) are pushing to wrap $1.27 trillion worth of unfinished budget work into a single "omnibus" appropriations bill.
Their 1,900-plus-page bill comes to the floor this week stuffed with provisions sought by lawmakers. It contains thousands of pet projects known as earmarks, pushed by Democratic and GOP senators alike — despite a pledge by Republicans to give up such projects next year.

There's also $4 million sought by Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell for the Kentucky National Guard's marijuana eradication efforts and $8 million sought by GOP Sen. John Thune of South Dakota to help maintain the B-1 bomber fleet in his state.
Although their states would benefit, both Republicans oppose the bill, and McConnell said Tuesday that he has asked for his earmarks to be removed[/B].Good boys. :)Democrats hope to pass the measure by a midnight deadline Saturday.

Yep, and one of the problems with the down fall of Rome was that the people realized that they could vote themselves wealth from the treasury. When that happens, game over.

Bread and Circuses ( Welfare and Warfare ) are the health of the empire.

No taxes are necessary. Your trusty Federal Reserve can print dollars out the gazoo.

Oh sure - and that spurs inflation, which brings down the value of the dollar . . . and next you know we're Germany 1930.

That's why laws are important. ;)

Never said they weren't, but it sure does seem selective which laws Obama chooses to follow at the moment....For example, want to take over the auto industry, then ignore contract law. Want to stop your political opponent from gaining a measure that would hamper your ability to destroy the country, then cite law that you said earlier it was not.....ie: Health care penalties, not a tax, now in court are a tax....Uh huh.

No, that's just your interpetation. Because you persoanlly don;t see the law doesn't mean he has ignored any laws.

Did Obama, or did he not say that the penalty associated with not carrying a health insurance policy, was not a tax?

you are so funny with your selective quotes.

Whether he did or not doesn't change what I said.

How do you have any credibility on this? — ABC’s Jonathan Karl to GOP Policy Committee Chairman John Thune (S.D.) and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) regarding their own earmarks in the bill

Hear! Hear!

How if only there was some constitutionally protected organization or group of organizations whose job it was to keep the public informed about these kinds of things and not use them for personal, political, or financial gain. And if only most people cared enough to do something about it...

May be true, but where is Pelosi and Reeds leadership. Seems they don't care and went along

Don't confuse the tax compromise with this bill to fund the government through the end of the 2011 fiscal year. This puppy, the last of its kind, has 6,000 earmarks totaling $8 billion tucked in $1.2 trillion in spending.

This is why there should be voter initiatives on the federal level. Politicians can not be trusted to do the right thing.

You're probably right in that there are things within the budget that I do want funded with my dollars, and to Boo's point that there are things that I don't, and that I elect reps on the basis that they support my ideals. But, even if this were to happen for say one day, everybody sends in their taxes on April 16th instead of the 15th, pay the penalty then in unified voice send the message to knock off the elitist crap! Maybe they would hear.....The phrase I like in this instance is "When the people fear the government you have tyranny, when the government fears the people, you have freedom"....

j-mac

Uh No. Most of the taxes collected by the Fed will have been collected well before April 15th. Mandatory withholding and estimated payments pretty much sink your ship there.

A better idea would be to simply enforce mandatory term limits with mandatory post service trials for all Congress members with potential for criminal penalties.

Too much Fox News there. Rome fell because it became too unmanagable, decadent and complecent. Not to mention much of its economy was based on plunder. You can't really keep an Empire going where large portions of income were based on plunder. There are only so many people left to conquer and every expansion comes with diminishing returns from occupation and adminstration. What partially kept Rome going was centralization of power. When that fractured, civil war was inevitable. And slave based economies never really work well over long periods of time.

But the bill has been laying around collecting dust. They were put in there before the election and before any promises were made. This piece of crap has a price tag of 1.3 trillion dollars. I sure hope we can stop it from going through and just push it forward for 45 days. Give them a chance to read it and get crap out that we can do without.

That's not all they are doing, not by a long shot... which goes to show you... The Socialists have absolutely no respect for the will of the American Public.

First they deceive their way into office, and then they cram all manner of crap down the electorates throats, and when the public screams STOP!, first with Brown and then the Midterms... they just shut their eyes, close their ears and keep going Full Speed Ahead.

The Clarion Call for 2012 should be... Remember 2010.

yes it does....Tremendously. It also shows the selective nature of when you choose to hide behind the law.

j-mac

No, it doesn't show anything of the kind. Instead of us going back and forth, how about you try and explain how it does?
