It's discretionary if otherwise not specifically stated.

Very very few are allowed back into the country once they perform their obligatory tour. There are too many Muslims who wish to go for Saudi Government to allow a selfish minority to keep coming back
This is a once in a lifetime event for nearly all Muslims

Most likely due to discrimination (real or perceived)

If the school disctrict had an enforced policy not to grant unpaid leave except on emergency issues (ie a family member was involved in a car accident and you had to take care of them) then she should lose the lawsuit.

If however the school disctrict tended to grant unpaid leave, but decided not to grant her unpaid leave (without good reason, such as she teaches a specialized course that a subsitute could not fill in) then she just might have a reasonable case

Why don't Christians celebrate Easter in November? Its part of her personal faith and just if you asked a Christian to celebrate Easter in November they'd be as equally uncomfortable in doing so. You can't ask people to change their faith to meet a convenient time line. Also as, you now know, the Islamic calender doesn't match up exactly with our calender, so the exact dates of the Hajj move, always going backward about 2 weeks every year. So in 2008 the Hajj was in late November. Now I have no idea how old this women is but the Hajj won't take place in the Summer till at least the 2020s, also since its a pillar of faith in Islam to go literally every Muslim in the world will at some point think about how he can arrange a trip, and most of them do. The Saudi government has to control who comes and who goes and only permits a certain amount every year for logistics reasons. So its not something you can just schedule willy-nilly whenever you decide to go, it requires serious forethought and planning.

    About Islam

Also while rituals may change over the years, the basic ideas generally remain the same. AND again since the Saudis control access to Mecca and the Hajj they decide when people can apply for visa for the Hajj, and a strict Islamic state isn't interested in someone's excuse that they have a job to do, and isn't willing to bend the rules to hold the Hajj year ahead. AND its up to her to decide what parts of her faith to hold and not uphold, just as its her choice which faith to follow or not to follow one at all.

Whats really ridiculous is how many people, who constantly claim to know everything about Islam in other topics, clearly show here they don't understand the basics of the religion.

if that were the case and there are millions who attend each year...you'd think they'd run out of muslims.

and no one still has answered the question:

why didn't she just save up her vacation and take paid leave to make the hajj? if they had denied her vacation to make the trip, then she'd have an actual case.

Oh yes but there is still more than enough for new people to enter. The amazing thing is that Saudi Arabia is still trying to expand its access to even remote areas of the Muslim world which can only mean more travellers.
