Michelle Obama has new warning on obesity

Totally agree! I see fat people everywhere. Me I don't care personally what people do. In fact, I have no right to force people to do what is constitutionally their right. I Do however have a right to solicit my government to bud out, or bud in? I choose neither. I want government the hell away from anything that we have the right to do. Even if it means being stupid or fat. Just increases the odds that my kids are going to do just fine when the competition for enlightenment is falling fast. :)

Tim-

you can "bud" out, and erod can "wrought" whatever he pleases. i'm so happy for you both that you judge people on their appearance, and i'm sure your kids will be fine adults.

I think that this might be something to think about.

Some of you say on here, if people choose to be fat slobs, they have the freedom to keep pounding down those db chzburgers...

And you're absolutely right, they do, if people want to be the size of a bus, you have my blessing.

But i think everyone should be able to admit the following, it doesn't work. And regardless of whether you have the freedom to commit a certain action, doesn't mean you should, our lifestyles and our diets simply are not conducive to a healthy, and strong society, at least in general, many people do take care of themselves.
So at the end of the day, when you know that something is in essence destroying society, you have 2 choices, keep doing it, or eventually let it destroy you. There is no advantage for a country to have the obesity rates you do, no positive spin you can put on it.
Lots of things are bad for society
drinking
gambling
smoking
adultery
pre-marital sex
gay sex
adult porn
Rap music
Rock and Roll
violent video games
single parents
abortion
laying on sofa, watching TV
not working, by choice
bars
accepting subsidies just because you qualify
Having Dish network while on welfare
wasting food
finding loop holes to avoid taxes
letting your pets reproduce
wasting all day on DP

And while we can do those things, . . . "should be able to admit the following, (they don't work). And the government's role should be.........
what?

And the government's role should be.........
what?

Encouraging people to eat healthy and exercise more. Perhaps making sure your kids actually have the choice to do so. If their choices are burgers, fries, and pizza at school, they're being denied even the choice to eat healthy or not. Is that what you want?

Provider of information. And when the government does something, like provide a school meal, it shoudl be nutritious. It isn't really all that controversial when you think about it.

Ok, lets go through them all with you.

Agreed.

Agreed.

Not nessecarily on society, in terms of Healthcare costs yes.

By extension if it ruins a marriage and the kids get all ****ed up, yes.

pre-marital sex

How does that effect you negatively? We're just havin a time.

Seriously? Just because Johnny is banging Billy its ruining our society? Get real.

adult porn

Yes, I can definitely see the damage its doing to everyone, we're all rushing to get rid of it.

Rap music
Rock and Roll

Oh Palease!

violent video games

Not my fault if a kid gets Grand Theft Auto from their parents.

single parents

In some cases, not in all...

I really hate to say this, but in some cases it could be argued its had a positive effect on society, see theory behind massive drop in crime rates in the 90's vs. Abortion legalization.

laying on sofa, watching TV
not working, by choice

Again, how does that effect YOU!

Again, some not all.

accepting subsidies just because you qualify

If you build it, they will come.

Having Dish network while on welfare
wasting food
finding loop holes to avoid taxes
letting your pets reproduce
wasting all day on DP

Meh **** it I got bored...

We are spending billions on Michelle's little project.
How much should we spend on the other things I listed that are harmful to society?

I think you know, nobody would be complaining if this was just Michelle "encouraging" people to eat healthier.

So there's not enough info out there already? We're bombarded with it.

Hey kid, look at your fat mom! Taco Bell ain't working. LOL

There's a lot of misinformation out there as well. The government can help with this. Not a real problem.

Tell it to Mrs. Obama.

And I hate to speak reality to you, but yes, you can tell an awful lot about someone by their appearance. Certainly not everything, because we're all born differently, but you can tell a lot. And you can definitely tell a lot after the first 10 minutes of watching or talking to them, too. Life is a constant job interview.

for you it might be, and how sad.

And, why do we have to spend billions to stop feeding them burgers and fried and start serving them meats and veggies?

Of course I didn't elaborate on her logic, because it's a ridiculous strawman argument. The US doesn't need even 25% of it population to maintain it's current numbers. Currently, less than 1% of the population is serving in the military. Obviously, there's not a shortage in actual manpower, and it doesn't justify by any means telling me what I have to feed my children.

I never said I agreed with her, I just added the part of her statement that explains the part you quoted. I like things in context. Sue me.

If they want to help fight obesity then they should find a way to change the menus schools and implement more physical education at public. As for the government trying to mandate what parents feed their kids its none of the government's damn business. In the US it is the citizens who own the government and it is the government who are servants of the tax payers, not the other way around.

I agree with this. More PE and more nutritious meals in schools is the way to go. It's a no brainer. As for what they do or eat at home, that is no longer the government's business.

My wife and I were talking about this the other day.

My girls make straight A's and play high-level club soccer and basketball. They're also both pretty like their mama. Because of athletics and other things they are involved in, they know a ton of kids and their families.

Then I look around and see these fat, lazy, complaining, underachieving, socially inept, unpolished kids everywhere I go. They waddle along behind their ginormous parents, eating french fries with their eyes glued to their Nintendo DS screen. And usually they're waddling behind their mom, because dad checked out a long time ago. I'd estimate this is 50 percent of the kids out there.

I can't help but think....it's going to be so easy for my girls to dominate these kids for the next 80 years. Even at a young age, my kids are already more sophisticated than these kids will be when they're 30.

This is what institutional dependency wroughts.

I agree with Michelle Obama on the problem, but government breeds this mentality, and government can't undo it. Here comes another few billion down the toilet.

I was with you on all of that, but you kinda lost me at the bolded part. How does government make these people fat and lazy?

Let me ask a question...

How many in here run a traditional 2-parent household where 1 parent (usually the father) works and the mother remains home? If you run your household this way, just say "I DO".

I'm serious! Everyone reading this post, Roger-up!

drinking to excess can destroy families, can cause the death or injury to innocent people, death, illness to the drinker, lead to poverty, crime
gambling addiction can lead to poverty, destruction of families, crime
smoking can lead to health issues, financial strain
adultery can destroy families
pre-marital sex can lead to low self-esteem later, STDs, unwanted children, abortions
gay sex can cause STDs
adult porn addiction can destroy families, lives
Rap music I just don't like it
Rock and Roll I do like it, but didn't want to look biased against Rap
violent video games Think they bad for impressionable young children and might lead to acting out.
single parents many live on government subsidies, disadvantage to the children
abortion morally bad for society and not healthy for the unborn
laying on sofa, watching TV causes obesity
not working, by choice not harmful I guess, just not helpful
bars can lead to arrests from fights or DUI
accepting subsidies just because you qualify drag on tax payers
Having Dish network while on welfare just not right if you can't afford food and rent on your own.
wasting food just wrong and well, wasteful.
finding loop holes to avoid taxes, legal but a simpler tax system would be more fair to those who can't find or use them.
letting your pets reproduce just wrong in every way unless you are a reputable breeder. fill up shelters, strain on animal control
wasting all day on DP
could lead to mental breakdowns and can cause obesity.

but the childhood obesity problem deserves 17 more gov. programs billions of dollars, tons of regulations, because it's costly to our healthcare.
Oh, and it's a danger to our national security.
It's breeding a cradle to grave mentality.
Government needs to get the hell out of the way and let people live their lives, and raise their own kids.

Has that even been traditional since the 60s? Okay, I've got a source saying 5.6 million stay at home moms out of 77.4 million households with children. Assuming stay at home dads are a pretty small number (sorry guys) it's pretty safe to say that most of us will say no.

Why?

 I'd rather spend the money on our kids then bailing out banks. How is the government preventing you from raising your kids again?

Is the govt actually mandating what we feed our kids?

When I read someone saying something like this I get suspicious about their intentions. Its sounds like she wants more than just healthy food and more PE at public schools.

“And from military leaders who tell us that when more than one in four young people are unqualified for military service because of their weight, childhood obesity isn’t just a public health threat, it’s not just an economic threat, it’s a national security threat as well.

Hey tell it to the first lady... I judge people based on the content of their character, always have, just raised that way. Yes, tis true that my thresholf for character is higher than perhaps yours, but I can't help you with that. :)
