US diplomat Richard Holbrooke dies

Richard Holbrooke, a brilliant and feisty U.S. diplomat who wrote part of the Pentagon Papers, was the architect of the 1995 Bosnia peace plan and served as President Barack Obama's special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan, died Monday, an administration official said. He was 69.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the family had yet to make a formal announcement of Holbrooke's death.

This man did great things for his nation, and should be remembered as a hero, IMO.

Rest in peace. Thank you for serving our country Mr. Holbrooke.

RIP Mr. Holbrooke, you served your country well.

Sudden death is always a shock. He will be missed.

It was the nicest thing I could say about him.

Yeah, but there was no reason to say it in the RIP thread. There have been enough of them about people I disagreed with, but I just left it with RIP and thoughts to go the family. It really isn't all that hard to do.

Thanks for your opinion.

Agree with him or not I do appreciate his service to the nation.

I prefer to honor the six Americans who died in Afghanistan on Sunday, and the guy who died yesterday as well. May we remember them forever.

Al, there is no doubt that we should honor those killed in action every day, and keep them close to our hearts in this struggle, but Mr. Holbrooke is also serving the country. Now, his policies and directions from Obama are a different matter, and for a different thread, but to die at 69 and so close to Christmas is a blow to not only his family, but to the nation who in this war needs someone on the ground speaking for the US. We now don't have that, until replaced.

Each President has the authority to place in those whom he feels will carry out his directions, and orders as CiC in direction of any war, and I sure wouldn't expect that Obama, or any other President would appoint people that are polar opposite of their respective goals.

So I'll close with one more plea, disagree with the policy? Start another thread highlighting that, for this thread, pay your respect and be done with it.
