unless you have high blood pressure, you don't have to worry about salt.

Did you read the article? This guy not only lost 27 pounds, but his bad cholesterol went down and his good cholesterol went up. His triglycerides went down by 39%. Is that healthy?
Well it's healthier, but losing weight alone will do that. He also took a multivitamin, still ate veggies, and limited his calories to 1800 a day. He also doesn't recommend his diet and I imagine most of the medical community wouldn't as well.

And for the record, I have known mildly overweight people that I've though of as healthier then some skinny people.

Like in this case, a doctor decided the parents were endangering her health.
And then found that wasn't the case.

However, it doesn't address the overall issue of childhood obesity. I suppose to start, I have to ask if you even consider it an issue.
Ofcourse I see it all the time. Not to Anamarie's extent, but the reasons that this happens today have far deeper reasons for happening than just the simple rotten parents.

Or they can eat the salad that the government is providing for them for free. It's not poison. I've counseled plenty of Marine wives on how to apply for WIC and not one of them complained that the government wasn't giving them twinkies. I might be a liberal, but beggars can't be choosers. If the kids dislike free, nutritious food that much, one of the parents better get a second job.

Well, you got me there. Look in the end I don't see a problem with better food in the schools, raising my children I used to shutter at the choices they were constantly offered, and wonder what the heck I was paying for when we chose to let them eat there. But I do think it vigilant to keep an eye on what exactly government is doing with our money, and with people like Cas Sunstein in office that believes that you can move people to government dependency with what he terms "nudging" them along, we owe it to the next generations to keep an eye on these people.

    Then, skinny is healthy?

No, but there's no health benefit to being fat dude.

There is such a thing as unhealthily skinny, especially if you're MALNUTRITIONED

    Therein lies the secret.

I think the biggest problem, is that there are more people doing this for a living

and fewer people doing this for a living

I'm deeply critical of today's parents. There's way too much parenting being done according to what's easiest. My mom made me eat my vegetables because it was the right way to raise me, not because it was easier. And I lived in such fear of her laws that I ate everything at school lunch, even the stuff I hated. Too many parents want to be liked by their children. The time for that is when they're out of your house. And it's not just nutritionally, I see it reflected in poor tests scores and (I hate to say it) rude behavior in public. So obviously I'm inclined to blame the parents, but I'm curious what other factors you think are involved.

Keeping your eye on the government is great policy no matter what side of the fence you vote on.
