Bernie Sanders' 8 and a Half Hour Speech in Senate

I realize this is a little late, but as far as a search on the topic can reveal, there's been no actual thread on it. Not sure if I should post it here, but C-SPAN seems to fit the description.

Yesterday, Bernie Sanders, the Senator from Vermont, the only open democratic socialist in the Congress gave an eight and a half hour speech detesting Obama's deal with the Republican leadership to extend the Bush tax cuts for 2 years in exchange for 13 months of unemployment benefits.

He brings up a variety of issues, including many those who agree with him brought up here. I've enjoyed it very much so far, and I'm only 2.5 hours in. I suggest you all give it a watch, no matter your political beliefs.

A link to the full 8.5hr speech can be found here

What I'm wondering is why he had to filibuster at all. For the past four years, Harry Reid seems to have been unable to muster the political will to make the Republicans ACTUALLY filibuster bills. All they had to do was announce that they were GOING to filibuster, and that was the end of it. But as soon as tax cuts for the rich are at stake, poor Bernie actually has to talk for 8 hours.

I think it was his choice to do so.

I think most people would have said "Hey shut the **** up already" instead of listening to a piece of crap commie whine for 8 and half hours, Wah its not fair that rich get tax cuts, wah I want my government hand out, wah I more of those rich people's money going to the poor, "wah so what those poor people didn't work for it I want them to get more". Can you imagine having to listen to that nonsense for eight and half hours.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I am proud to have a fine American like Bernie Sanders in the United States Senate. Watching and listening to him stand up for the middle class and stand up to the sycophants and toadies of the upper class was courageous and a source of inspiration to keep up the fight against wealth and privilege from taking over even more of American society. There are times when I look at the Rand Paul types, the Sarah Palin types and the Mitch McConnells of this land and I feel it is all going down hill fast and they are greasing the tracks.

A big THANK YOU to Senator Sanders, one truly great American.

I caught parts of it a couple times. Both times he was talking about the top 400 richest people in the US.
He should have been talking about the lower bracket of millionaires and small manufacturers who will be hit with a tax increase.
You know, the ones who hire and fire people depending on the economy and taxes.
With our unemployment rate, taxes shouldn't be raised on anyone. We need all the jobs we can get.

Ain't socialism great? I'm so proud we have them legislating for us. I was getting pretty damn sick of living in a free country.

You do know that the American military is the perfect example of socialism within a rabidly anti-socialist society right?
