Pelosi pledges to win changes as House Dems reject tax-cut deal - TheHill.com

The House Democratic Caucus on Thursday rejected the tax deal negotiated between the White House and Senate Republicans.

The non-binding vote of the caucus held during a closed-door meeting puts tremendous pressure on House leaders to win changes to a proposal the White House has presented as a "take it or leave it" package.

Why do they insist on calling this a "Tax cut" deal, no one is getting a tax cut, they just if passed, won't be raised. :doh

honesty isn't one of the botox bitch's strong points

Obama better get the House dems on board quick.

And once again, the Democratic leaders snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...

it does not appear to me that forums membership fully appreciates what this bombshell development exactly portends

all will, however, very soon

Oh. My. Should we stock up on popcorn, The Prof?

It would be a tax cut and if this passes, the right wing could say it's Obama's tax cut rather than Bush's in 2012. Not rocket science.

Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic caucus is trying to save Obama from himself.

actually enacting this would help Obama in 2012

and hurt the dems if they oppose it

This, I am certain, comes as no surprise to anyone on The Hill. It's all about perception. IMO, they will lower the threshhold for inheritance taxes from its proposed $5 million and increase the tax percentage back to what it was before. I predict this will happen -- and that both sides knew it was going to happen all along.

Apparently it is rocket science.... If the bill fails, all our taxes go up, if it passes, no body's taxes for down.

It's not a tax cut.

I agree with those that have posted saying that the Bill is not a tax cut. We have been at this tax level, for what almost a decade? What the Bill does is keep taxes from going up for all Americans. I find it interesting that Repubs were labeled the party of "no". Now that the Dems are saying "no", its being spun as a difference is how to get things done. IMO, the Dems are now the party of "no".

If our elected officials want to put a knife into the average American, don't extend the cuts. We will remember at the next election.

It is a semi-fascinating spin/twist that the Democrats are putting on the pending tax rate increases. Somehow not imposing major tax increases on the top income earners with "cost $700 billion".

By that logic, we need to raise the taxes on the rich by three times what is currently proposed. Not doing so will "cost us over $2 trillion!!!".

It's never boring....;)

.

It is funny how the Dems and media continue to call these tax "cuts".

They're the same they have been for a long, long time.

Oh I get it... if taxes expire... it's a tax hike... if they are maintained it's not a tax cut even though we are continuing a tax cut...

or why the dem lapdogs in the media have not asked the following obvious questions

1) if the Bush tax rates (I won't call them cuts -they were negating the Clinton TAX HIKES) were so bad for the wealthy WHY DID NOT THE DEMS-WHO HAD COMPLETE CONTROL FOR TWO YEARS-get rid of those BUSH TAX RATES? did they want to have an issue to whine about or did they realize JACKING UP THE TAXES ON THE TOP 2% would be DISASTROUS??

2) WHY did the dems claim the Bush tax rates ONLY HELPED THE RICH but now claim that the rates as applied to the bottom 98% are so GREAT NOW?

Oh I get it... if taxes expire... it's a tax hike... if they are maintained it's not a tax cut even though we are continuing a tax cut...

we are continuing rates that lasted longer than clinton's tax hikes. clinton was the aberration

Victory for who? Obama? The Republicans? **** them both. This deal sucks and SHOULD be defeated. How about a victory for the American people - if Obama insists on caving to the Republicans for tax cuts for the wealthy, he should at least get some economic stimulus in exchange.

You DO understand this doesn't REDUCE taxes for ANYONE... right? That it maintians them at the current level? How, exactly, is that a cut?

so the howls about the deficit are just rants with no substance. You libs claim the tax rates cost money yet your response to this "cost" is to spend even more.

typical washington thinking that has caused this country to be FUBAR

Clinton's rates were permanent, Bush's were temporary.

so were the rates before Clinton so how'd that work out

semantic weasel words

Kandahar is a welfare-socialist--he thinks that the rich exist to pay as much taxes as the rabble and their representatives demand

That is entirely 100 % dishonest representation of Kandahar's beliefs.

The Bush tax cuts were set to expire at the end of this year...that was part of the original deal. So it's a cut from what the taxes would be, in the absence of any congressional action. But really, this is irrelevant. You can call them tax cuts or maintaining low tax rates or whatever you want. The point is that if Obama is going to capitulate to the Republicans and give them everything they want and then some, he sure as **** better get something more than some unemployment benefits out of the deal.

If it passes I feel sorry for the people who will be expecting a tax cut when they open their checks.
