SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launched from Florida Wednesday morning, marking what could be a significant step toward commercial space travel.

The craft lifted off from Kennedy Space Center at 10:43 a.m. ET.

The launch and a successful re-entry would be steps toward commercial space ventures that could eventually ferry astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station. It also coincides with the scaling back of some publicly-funded space programs.

To infinity and beyond!

I don't get the point of commercial space travel, it quite literally has no-where to go.

Except for the points listed in the article, of ferrying astronaughts.

lets give already wealthy corporations billions more AND balance the budget.

wonderful.

can you say, corporate welfare?

Nowhere to go? Space is the final frontier!

Yeah, so you're in space, then where do you go? Until we get faster than light travel, and/or great terraforming technology, we're not going any further than the space station or the moon.

It will lead to cheaper travel to low to mid orbit.

As their is commercial demand for tourists, and satelites to be put into orbit, a cheaper method of doing so is what private industry is generally good at compared to government programs. NASA on the other hand should focus on areas that do not have commercial markets. Like travel to the moon or mars for example. It should be working on the technology to get the US to the moon again and from their to Mars. Just getting someone or thing to space is not that technologically challenging anymore
