FoxNews.com - California Town Mulls Resolution to Honor Army Private Accused of Passing Secret Info to WikiLeaks

Amid calls from some politicians to press treason charges -- which could carry the death penalty -- against whoever leaked secret cables to WikiLeaks, the Berkeley, Calif., City Council is entertaining a resolution to declare that an Army private accused of leaking some classified information to the website is an American hero.

City Peace and Justice Commissioner Bob Meola, who authored the resolution, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Pfc. Bradley Manning, 22, is a patriot who deserves a medal.

"If he did what he's accused of doing, he's a patriot and should get a medal," Meola told the newspaper. "I think the war criminals should be the ones prosecuted, not the whistle-blowers."

Ah yes, the liberals just love a good America hater.

How long until the first Julian Assange statue is erected in front of the town hall at Berkley?

Libs now have their new superheroes. I'm sure it's just killing Obama and Holder to have to prosecute this guy. He is, after all, everything they aspire to be.

And now, the Debate Politics cast of liberals are up next to attack me, too! Grab some popcorn.

Why am I not surprised? I wonder if Jane Fonda will be there to rub elbows with a fellow traitor.

Not sure, but it's a short drive for Nancy Pelosi. Or, at least for her driver. Or unless she decides to fly her private jet across the bay.

It's nice to see that there is no issue that people won't try and narrowmindedly put into categories they can kinda sorta understand almost.

Berkeley's infrastructure is crumbling, and this is how the Berkeley public officials use their time?

So help me to understand the best way to honor spies. I'm a little rusty.

Nice straw man. We should not honor spies, I have not said we should honor spies. I have not implied we should honor spies. In point of fact, nothing I posted had anything to do with Manning, only with the kind of people who try and make something which is not partisan into something which is.

How is berating a university, for honoring a traitor, partisan? Wouldn't you agree that any college honchos in this country, who would even consider honoring a traitor, have **** between their ears?

Or, are you refraining from badmouthing Berkley, in fear of losing your Liberal pledge pin and not being allowed into the Liberal treehouse anymore? Now, that, would be partisan.

What is Berkley contemplating?

Honoring a spy. That's all I said.

If you're denying that Berkley is liberal, that I just don't know what to say anymore.

On one level, I have a feeling that Private Benning felt that he'd uncovered the same sort of wrongdoing that Ellsberg did in the Pentagon papers, when he read the classified information about the helicopter attack on (apparently) unarmed civilians in Iraq.

That's exactly the sort of information that needs to see the light of day. It should not be hushed up and hidden behind a purely military investigation. The American public have a right to information about those kinds of issues, just like we have a right (and a responsibility to know) about what happened in the hidden prisons at Gitmo and in Abu Ghraib.

On another level, Private Benning clearly violated the law and his sworn oath, and he didn't stop with releasing the single incident, but went much, much further to release reams of information that were not necessarily evidence of a government coverup, and in fact, of which he had zero knowledge or understanding.

Private Benning will have his day in court. It's up to the jury/judge (and, frankly, history) to decide whether his actions were traitorous or heroic.

Let me ask those who are so quick to condemn him, though. Do you think Daniel Ellsberg was a traitor or a hero?

I think history has determined that he's a hero. So, what are the crucial differences between Ellsberg and Private Benning?

He did not berate the university, he berated liberals. This is a large, unsubtle difference.

Catz, there are legal methods and channels to use if you think you find wrongdoing. He chose not to use those channels.

The university happens to be the holy mecca of liberals. They set the national agenda.

No they do not. Thank you for playing, but complete and total fail has been achieved.

I agree. On the other hand, given his position in the military, he may have felt his options were limited, in the same way that Daniel Ellsberg felt that he had limited means to ensure that the American public were allowed to read the report on the Vietnam War.

That's the sort of thing that will be addressed in court. I've not heard Private Benning's testimony, so I can't speak knowledgeably to why he felt releasing this information to wikileaks was his best option.

I personally believe that he will be adjudicated as guilty on his charges, though, because his release of information was not limited to the report on the suspected wrongdoing, but went far beyond that. I also think he was operating on about a half carton of brains rather than a full load.

Berkeley considering this award--at this point in time--is adolescent, provocative, premature and stupid.

LOL, OK.

Pelosi, Reid, and Obama are the most powerful elected liberals in the world, and they are the quintessential poster children for what Berkley represents.

But never mind.

Legally, if he reports a suspected wrongdoing, he is protected. He may not have ended up with the result from the information he intended, but that is how the world works sometimes. Instead, he stole the information, much/most of which he could not have had the time to review himself, and gave it to a foreign national. I don't see any way in which he is not going to end up doing major jailtime, hopefully for the rest of his life.

But never mind.

Even those three do not represent all of liberals. For example, as I have discussed with Catz in this very thread, I think Manning is at best a criminal, and I am a liberal. Many at least liberals agree with me. This is what I mean by your trying to put something which is not partisan into a partisan framework.

I have to agree with you on this one, I see a long prison term in his future, and a justified one, at that.
